1881-The Beginning
The concept of headphones arose in 1881 from the receiver part of the telephone. At that time telephone was the only source of converting electrical signals into sound.
A type of headphone was invented in 1881 by Ezra Gilliland that was used for telephone operators. It weighed over 10 pounds. It had only one earpiece attached to a phone and a microphone resting on the shoulder. This was the first time in history where the concept of headphones was developed.
1891-The Sound Drivers
In 1891, Ernest Mercadier, a French engineer, succeeded in making miniature sound drivers that could easily fit in-ears. This was basically like the modern earbuds we use nowadays. He also used a rubber band covering that protected the ear from friction and worked as better sound isolation.
1894-The Stethoscopic Headphone
In 1894, Telephone, a British company, discovered a different type of headphone that closely seemed like a stethoscope, as it had a rod attached to it to handle.
This discovery offered the people of Britain to listen to the current news and live performances of theatres going on in Britain.
Then repeated improvements on these machines continued, which finally resulted in the discovery of the modern headphones.
1910-The Modern Headphone
During 1910, American Navy was searching for various ways of Radio Communications. At that time, Nathaniel Baldwin succeeds in discovering the first version of modern headphones. One of the strange things in his discovery was that he created these headphones on his kitchen table while working.
He handed over this device to a Navy officer; initially American Navy didn't pay enough attention to it, but gradually, this device became their favorite as it was not only producing a good sound quality but also it was comfortably get adjusted on the head using the two bands it had. Eventually, Baldwin got an order of 100 headphones from US Navy.
1958-The Stereo Headphone
Till now, headphones were used only for communications and military use. In 1958, John C Koss made the first stereo headphone, and he named it the Koss SP-3. This model offered a private listening system for the users.
This innovation built a vast advancement in headphone technology. Various companies capped the idea of Koss and also delivered much better headphones at that time.
1960-The Radio Headphone
In 1960, the first wireless headphone raided the market called Radio Headphone. This device allowed the users to listen to everything playing on the radio directly.
1979-The Walkman
At that time, headphones were quite bulky, and users couldn't listen to anything of their wish. Then in 1979, the Sony company launched the Walkman. This device offered the users to listen to their music library instead of the radio. Also, due to their low weight, headphones became portable and could be carried anywhere.
1989-The Noise Cancelling Headphone
In 1989, the Bose company released the first Noise-canceling headphone that delivered a better listening clarity to the users as it cancels out all the outside noise.
Initially, this model was used by pilots only, but it eventually became popular among ordinary people.
Subsequently, Sony company released neckband headphones, and its demand was very high at that time.
Headphones During 21st Century
The strange thing happened during the 21st century when Apple company released the first version of iPods. This release stunned the headphone companies as iPods were more portable than headphones, and a sudden increase in the demand for iPods was seen.
Also, the advancement in Bluetooth further contributed to the growth of headphones during the 2000s.
