Over 1 billion youngsters at hearing loss risk due to headphones, loud music
According to a 2021 report by WHO, 1 in 4 people will be living with some degree of hearing loss by 2050
During the pandemic, due to online meetings, video calls with friends and family or binge-watching sessions, many of us were glued to our headphones for hours on end. Now, even as WFH has ended, headphones continue to be an essential part of our lives. And this is definitely harming us. A study, published in the journal BMJ Global Health, says over one billion young people are potentially at risk of hearing loss due to their use of headphones and earbuds and attendance at music festivals
Tips while using headphones:-
• Avoid loud sounds that exceed 70 decibels
• Wear ear protectors
• If attending a function, avoid sitting near high-volume speakers
• Avoid parties with very loud music
Stop using Headphones after every 45 minutes:-
Doctors advise that one should not be using headphones for a long period of time. It is always preferable to avoid headphones, but those who need to use them should take certain precautions. "Limit the usage time, keep the volume low and take breaks. Wherever it is required to use headphones for more than four or five hours, use the lowest volume possible and switch to speaker mode whenever possible. "If your work demands that you need to use them, then you should take a break after every 45 minutes or one hour for 10 to 15 minutes. If that is also not possible, then do this for one ear and then for the next one. In general, headphones are better than earphones
Use smartphones that can alert you when your headphones exceed the sound limit. Use apps that can tell you if your headphones are exceeding the limit
More Patients are coming with hearing issues recently:-
Doctors share that they have seen an increase in the number of patients who are coming with hearing issues recently. Hearing loss caused by noise has long been a source of concern. In the recent past, more people are coming with complaints of hearing issues due to the overuse of headphones. This is causing irreversible damage to their nerves.

"The biggest issue here is that people are constantly listening to music at high volume and usually if somebody is listening to loud music without headphones, you point it out to them and insist on reducing volume but when someone is hearing it personally, they don't realize it," says Dr Rajeev URI, Senior Consultant, Department of ENT Head and Neck Surgery, Apollo Hospital
'Young people are more vulnerable'
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that over 430 million people worldwide currently have disabling hearing loss. Young people are particularly vulnerable because of their use of personal listening devices (PLDs), such as smartphones, headphones and earbuds
