Memes are used in many ways:
Slang and daily folklore. Today, people use memes to communicate across topics. Think of the 'angry cat' memes or 'Keanu Reeves'. They are used to express surprise, disappointment, joy, doubt. What separates memes from other types of art-based objects is the powerful feeling embedded in them. There is always some kind of emotion that the meme directs you to - like disgust or joy. Memes are subjective.
Political bombs. The founder of Greenpeace coined the term ‘mind bombs’. He understood that once we saw it, an amazing picture could not be seen, so he sent expensive ships with photographers to follow the whalers. These ships were not there to stop the whale killings but to record them. Green peace activists have been able to capture the sad images of poor animals that have been circulated to journalists and international newspapers. From a public point of view the story of whale hunting is now often linked to images of suffering - all because of the 'mind bomb'. Another example of a bomb blast that affected a political career was that of Ed Miliband, a former Labor leader who was photographed struggling to eat Bacon sarnie. Memes mocking this breakfast fiasco have been a criticism of Miliband for not communicating with the working class people. Was this moral? Was this viral stigma justified? This and many other cases make us wonder what good memes can be and how memes can damage dignity.
Fast food media. Due to their high visibility and humor, memes serve as fast food media. They are like cheeseburgers - they are very experimental in color, aroma and texture, but with a low amount of nutrients. They feed you a little (on the news agenda), but you really need a decent diet (or reading a reputable newspaper) to grow your body and mind.
Meme has a comfortable quality of in-house humor and public conversation; however, they cannot integrate people into communities if other obligations do not exist. Meme's do not age well - most of them evaporate within days, but the points they express can leave a lasting impression on society and politics. In experimental countries, memes can get even more value - as people throw them into public discourse to send out hostile messages and fight corruption. But what if evil forces use memes too? These powers can use memes to deceive people and promote wrong ideas. When does a cool inner joke become a powerful political message? What is clear is that memes are a communication tool that influences our society and that they will stay here.
