How Guava the best Fabulous fruit tree

Highly ornamental and easy to grow, guava can be an excellent choice for a fruit tree in a small Mediterranean garden.

Guava, in some ways, has to be one of the best fruit trees for a small private garden. In tropical and subtropical climates, it can grow large and become a pest. But in the Mediterranean and similar hot and dry climates, it is unable to grow outside of cultivation and only reaches a height of about 4-5 meters. (12 feet)

The common, or tropical guava, has many qualities that have endeared it to home gardeners. It has a nice, sculptural shape that is easy to shape and cut; beautiful, reddish, peeling bark; attractive flowers and, of course, its tasty and decorative, lemon-colored fruits. Unlike many fruit trees, the Guava is resistant to pests and diseases, and although it requires water during hot and dry summers, it can tolerate drought if necessary. It is best grown in frost-free areas and in rich, well-composted soil.

The pear-shaped fruits have a musky, slightly sour taste. When you eat through the skin, you get to the sweet, juicy pulp – a bit of a strange sensation. However, guava fruit is not to everyone's taste. It is this, along with their somewhat pungent smell, that causes people not to include it in their garden, which is a shame considering the overall benefits of the tree. Smell is also a matter of taste. Some people, including me, love it!

An excellent alternative to regular guava is the strawberry guava. It grows to about 3 meters in a Mediterranean climate, but can easily be kept smaller. Combines beautifully with other dwarf fruit trees, especially kumquats, as both leaves and fruit are similar in size and shape. This makes strawberry guava a good choice for a container plant.

The fruits are small, deep dark red, sweet and practically odorless. The bark in mature specimens is even more decorative than the bark of the common guava, it has a reddish, golden-brown hue. It is also colder tolerant and can be grown in areas that experience light, occasional frosts.

Growing fruit trees in private gardens often involves fighting a number of pests and diseases, a factor that unfortunately disqualifies most species. Since guavas, at least in dry climates, tend to be virtually pest free, you may consider placing a specimen or two in the garden. You could do a lot worse!
