What is Glutathione?
Our bodies naturally contain the chemical glutathione. Glycine, glutamate, and cysteine acid are the three amino acids that make up this antioxidant. In addition to helping with various body processes, it promotes skin lightening by healing damaged cells. Even though our bodies naturally create glutathione, as we age, our systems produce less of it, necessitating the need for supplements or other treatments.
Dr. Nagpur Jain, a dermatologist, told Health Shots that glutathione was one of the body's most potent antioxidants when we contacted her. This is gaining popularity in skin whitening treatments that achieve the target pigmentation with little to no adverse effects. It is applied topically using a glutathione cream or whitening tablet. Let's look at how Dr. Jain contributed to our understanding of glutathione's function.
Types of Glutathione
1. The active form of the antioxidant is reduced glutathione (GSH or L-glutathione).
2. The inactive form of glutathione is called oxidized glutathione (GSSG).
The majority of it only exists in its reduced form under physiological settings. As it interacts with the free radicals in the cellular environment, it oxidizes, deactivates, and transforms into GSSG. The good news is that our body's glutathione reductase enzymes can change it back into its active form.
How to Use Glutathione in Daily Routine?
All types of skin, including sensitive skin, can be treated topically with glutathione because it is non-irritating. Both in the morning and at night, after washing your face, you can apply it directly to your skin. Although it is not photosensitive, it is always advised to top it with a layer of sunscreen. Oxidized glutathione comes in a variety of combinations as a 2% w/w solution for topical application. After six weeks of daily application twice, it begins to produce results. Although the formulation may vary based on the skin type, it is appropriate for all skin types. For dry skin, a cream base is suggested, while for oily skin, a serum.
Adults should take up to 50 mg/kg (1-2 gm) of glutathione per day (in 2 distinct doses), depending on their body weight, if consuming it orally. Vitamin C should also be taken in equal doses after meals. Only after taking the dose for a minimum of three months may one notice a difference in the general brightness of the skin. The required maintenance dose is 500 milligrams per day for an indeterminate period of time.
How does It work for Skin Whitening?
The enzyme tyrosine is found in melanocytes, specialized cells that create the pigment melanin, which is then in charge of coloring our skin. By attaching to the enzyme and preventing it from functioning, glutathione treatment stops the formation of melanin.
Glutathione, the most potent antioxidant, is present in every human cell and helps the body eliminate dangerous free radicals from heavy metals. The body's cells cannot effectively detoxify without this chemical, and there is a high risk of cell damage. Additionally, age spots can be successfully reduced, and the signs of aging reversed, with a glutathione supplement. Another advantage is the elimination of wrinkles, black holes, and other spot marks from the body.
