AI’s Role in Spreading False and Biased Information
These generative AI models have the potential to fabricate false and biased information which can be disseminated widely and repetitively, factors which ultimately dictate the extent to which such information can be entrenched in people’s beliefs. Individuals are most susceptible to influence when they are seeking information and tend to firmly adhere to the information once it’s been received.

University of Southern California (USC) computer science experts share their perspectives on the meteoric rise of generative AI application ChatGPT.
Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has gained massive popularity and widespread usage, with millions of users around the world turning to generative AI technology to prompt conversations ranging from the practical to the creative. While it holds promise for applications like drafting cover letters, debugging code, and even penning screenplays and song lyrics, the application’s popularity also opens up ethical quandaries. How accurate are the responses? How was it trained? How could it change the way we live, for better or for worse? And would you trust it to act as your therapist?
To get a sense of the potential promises and perils of ChatGPT, we turned to a group of USC computer science researchers and natural language processing experts. Open AI’s ChatGPT can score at or around the approximately 60 percent passing threshold for the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), with responses that make coherent, internal sense and contain frequent insights. This is according to a study by Tiffany Kong, Victor, and colleagues at Ansible health, which was published on February 9, 2023, in the open-access journal Digital Health.
ChatGPT is a new artificial intelligence (AI) system, known as a large language model (LLM), designed to generate human-like writing by predicting upcoming word sequences. Unlike most chatbots, ChatGPT cannot search the internet. Instead, it generates text using word relationships predicted by its internal processes. The relatively small input size restricted the depth and range of analyses, the authors note their findings provide a glimpse of ChatGPT’s potential to enhance medical education, and eventually, clinical practice. For example, they add, clinicians at already use ChatGPT to rewrite jargon-heavy reports for easier patient comprehension.
“Reaching the passing score for this notoriously difficult expert exam, and doing so without any human reinforcement, marks a notable milestone in clinical AI maturation,” say the authors.
