How Future Smartphones with OLED Panels will Feature Inflatables Keyboards

 

On a smartphone, is it possible to have a physical keyboard without sacrificing the touchscreen? 

The Future Interfaces Group (FIG) at Carnegie Mellon University has created a technique called Flat Panel Haptics that enables inflated buttons on an OLED display. The Flat Panel Haptics board developed by FIG lately represents a milestone in a technology that has been under development for the past 15 years. It is only five millimeters thick. This was accomplished by developing an Embedded Electro-Osmotic Pump (EEOPs), which uses an electrical current to control a particular pumping fluid. The pumps are positioned between a flexible surface on top and a reservoir of this fluid at the bottom. Pumps inside the stack that are powered by electricity can raise a stiff button at the top by up to five millimeters. 

In a publication discussing this method in great detail, FIG disclosed that the top layer of the earliest prototypes used soft silicone. Despite not being as flexible as silicone, modern AMOLED screens are reportedly adaptable enough to allow for the conversion of some of the screen into a full-sized QWERTY keyboard. as necessary, the buttons can "reveal [themselves] and sink back when necessary." Additionally, FIG was able to use the EEOPs in new ways, such as pumping an app icon in and out in response to pending notifications. Large buttons can also be made for alarms' snooze bars. They too have the ability to be animated or remain "inflated until pressed." 

The use of an inflatable keyboard may be practical. First, by providing a tangible signal for on-screen material on the keyboard in addition to assistance from AI assistants like Siri, it can improve how blind people use smartphones. Additionally, the tactile feedback may result in more immersive mobile gaming because players can feel the buttons physically. It's difficult to predict if phone providers will be interested in inflatable buttons, though. The BlackBerry Storm had a touchscreen that also served as a physical button back in 2008. Initial reviews of this feature were mostly negative because it made text creation significantly more challenging than it needed to be. Physical buttons on touchscreens have been eschewed by phone manufacturers ever since, but FIG's Flat Panel Haptics may change that. Instead of just having one large button, devices would include a whole keyboard. 

Since this technology has a few drawbacks, there is still a lot of work to be done for FIG. The researchers are aware of the buttons' flimsy durability and how much electricity would be required to keep everything running. Additionally, it would make phones bulkier, so maybe tablets would be a better fit.
