How flexible work hours can make your heart 10 years younger?
Boston, MA Compared to the typical 9–5 schedule, flexible work schedules may lower the risk of heart disease by up to 10 years, per a recent study. Researchers discovered that some employees could reduce their cardiovascular risk to a level usually observed in people five to ten years younger than them by altering their office hours.
According to an experiment by a team from Penn State University and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, employees over 45 and those with a higher risk of heart disease benefited the most from this change in work schedule. There was also a lower chance of heart disease for other employees.
This research included participants from two different companies: one that employed low-wage caregivers and the other that employed high-tech workers in the IT industry. Supervisors were trained to assist both the professional and personal lives of their staff members. Staff members participated in supervisor-led training sessions aimed at improving staff autonomy over their work schedules and assignments.
According to a press release from co-lead author Lisa Berkman, the Harvard Chan School's Thomas D. Cabot Professor of Public Policy and Epidemiology, "the study illustrates how working conditions are important social determinants of health."

One of the first studies to look into the connection between a patient's career and heart disease was released in the American Journal of Public Health. 555 male and female technical employees from the IT company who were paid well and moderately participated in the study. An additional 973 low-wage, mostly female caregivers from the long-term care company signed up for the trial.

Overall, systolic blood pressure, BMI, glycated hemoglobin, smoking status, cholesterol levels, and other health parameters were recorded by the researchers at the start of the study and again 12 months later for the 1,528 participants. Each person's cardio metabolic risk score (CRS) was determined; a higher score denotes a higher chance of disease.
The researchers found that workplace interventions had no "significant" overall effect on participants' CRS. On the other hand, individuals with a higher baseline risk of cardiovascular disease showed a discernible decrease in CRS.
In terms of health, participants who saw a reduction in their CRS experienced a decline that was equivalent to being 5.5 to 10.3 years younger. Employees with a higher CRS who were over 45 saw the biggest improvements.

Orfeu Buxton, co-lead author and director of Penn State's Sleep, Health & Society Collaboratory, concludes, "The intervention was designed to change the culture of the workplace over time with the intention of reducing conflict between employees' work and personal lives and ultimately improving their health."
