How Exercise Affects What We Eat — and How Much We Eat

Both physically and psychologically, exercise affects our relationship with food. When you begin a new exercise regimen, you will assume you can consume more calories than you need, making weight loss (if that is your goal) difficult. However, according to health experts, planning meals and understanding how exercise affects our appetite and perception of food will make lifestyle changes simpler.

Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become more difficult for certain people to exercise as often (or as intensely) as they used to. Indeed, many of us have adopted a more sedentary lifestyle in recent years, gaining unwanted weight as a result. However, as constraints loosen, many of us have begun to consider how to lose weight and exercise in a safe, calculated manner. According to new research published in the journal Nutrients, this activity can be made easier. In addition, the research looked at the relationship between physical activity and how and what we eat. The findings include some fascinating insights into our relationship with exercise and food, as well as a better road map for those looking to make lifestyle changes.

 

What the study reveals :

Researchers from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the University of Nebraska surveyed 41 healthy adults between the ages of 19 and 29, 23 women and 18 men. The average body mass index (BMI) of the participants was 23.7. Based on height and weight, this is an approximation of body fat. A BMI of over 25 means that a person is “overweight.” They were randomly assigned to either a 45-minute exercise session or a 45-minute rest time at their first visit. At their second meeting with the researchers, they would turn and complete the opposite session. 

Those assigned to the exercise group were given electronic questionnaires about how hungry or full they were, their desired amount of food to consume, and a choice between types of food that varied in the amount of time it would take to eat them before each visit. The participants would then write down the portion sizes they desired and the type of food item to inform the researchers of their preferred food quantities. These preferences were obtained for both immediate and delayed food intake after 4 hours. Participants will then perform 45 minutes of exercise on a bicycle ergometer after completing this questionnaire.

Those who did not participate in the exercise group completed all three rounds of questionnaires, but instead of 45 minutes of exercise, they were given rest periods.

 

What were the outcomes?

The researchers discovered that exercise resulted in a greater increase in the amount of food consumed. This happened immediately after exercise and again 30 minutes later. They also discovered that exercise increased the appetite for immediate consumption immediately after the workout and 30 minutes later.

“What surprised us the most was that the increase in — hypothetical — preferences for food amount and immediate intake was already visible, though not as solid, immediately after the Karsten Köhler, Ph.D., professor of exercise, nutrition, and fitness at TUM, told Healthline about the study's findings. According to Köhler, his research team expected the increase to be evident after the 30-minute post-exercise cycle but not immediately after exercise. He attributed this to "exercise-induced anorexia," or a decrease in a person's sense of hunger or appetite during and immediately after exercise.

Anorexigenic hormones and exercise-induced changes in appetite-stimulating hormones trigger this phenomenon. “However, the fact that immediate post-exercise increases were less robust than 30-minute post-exercise increases somewhat validates our initial hypothesis,” he added.
When asked why someone could overheat or consume more food after exercising, Köhler explained that the body reacts to both psychological and physiological cues from exercise.

The psychological aspect includes the desire for a “reward” for completing a workout. In contrast, the physiological aspect stems from metabolic and endocrine signals from your body, which “stimulate food consumption to compensate for the increased energy expenditure of exercise,” according to him.
