Class at Nevermore Academy is back in session. On January 6, Netflix confirmed that “more torture is coming,” with Wednesday season two officially being ordered up. In a joint statement to Netflix’s Tulum, cocreators Miles Miller and Alfred Gough said, “We can’t wait to dive headfirst into another season and explore the kooky, spooky world of Nevermore.” They added, “We just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first.”
Less than two months after its release, the series has already racked up over 1 billion viewing hours, and earned leading lady Jenna Ortega nominations for both a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award. The viral scene of Wednesday dancing has been viewed on YouTube alone over 36 million times and sparked a TikTok trend recreating the choreography. Wednesday Addams herself tweeted out the announcement of season two, saying, “I’ve been hunted, haunted, and mimicked millions of times across the internet. It’s been pure torture. Thank you.” So what’s in store for the teenage overlord of darkness this time around?
Here’s a look at everything we do and don’t know about season two of Wednesday. Of course, everyone’s favorite scream queen, Jenna Ortega, will step back into her iconic black braids, but little else about the cast has been revealed. However, it feels like a safe bet to assume that everyone who made it out of season one alive, including bestie Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), Bianca Barclay (Joy Sunday), and Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hines White), will return to Nevermore Academy. As for characters like Principal Wees (Gwendoline Christie), it might be naive to believe she’s actually dead. We also can’t count out Marilyn Thorn hill (former Wednesday Christina Ricci); her spells might just transcend her assumed jail cell. Anything is possible in Tim Burton’s mystical universe. Hopefully, we will get to see more of the famous Addams family in season two, with Catherine Zeta-Jones as Mortician, Luis Guzmán as Gomez, and Fred Arisen as Uncle Fester. Maybe season two will expand the family with introductions of other iconic members like Cousin It. Wednesday's fate really is an endless, deep, dark black hole of possibility. But as we saw in the finale of season one, the Hyde, revealed to be Tyler Gal pin (Hunter Dorian), is technically still out there, so his return could be imminent. Plus, Wednesday is still dealing with an unidentified stalker on campus, one that menaces not only her, but her beloved disembodied hand-friend Thing. “[The stalker proves] that threats remain out there…to both Wednesday and the school,” Miller told Tulum. “Not all not loose ends have been tied up neatly as she thinks they have.” Luckily, revenge sounds like an extracurricular activity Wednesday would enjoy next semester. Though the next season has been confirmed, no official date has been set. But if any cast members are spotted returning to Romania, where season one of Wednesday was, that could give us a hint about filming schedules. Might we suggest spooky season. No, probably not. According to Netflix, after Ortega tried a take of not blinking, director Tim Burton was “so enamored” with the choice that he instructed her not to blink anymore, not even once, while in character. Sounds like torture, or as Wednesday would call it: fun.
