How Eat more for weight gain – quality first, quantity second

Being underweight usually occurs when the energy (kilojoule) intake is less than the energy expended. In other words, you have to eat more to acquire weight.

The key to healthy weight gain is to make every of your kilojoules as nutrition dense as possible. Consuming more empty calories, such as soft drinks and chips, is ineffective for building muscle, strengthening bones, or repairing tissue after surgery.

Suggestions include:

Calculate the number of kilojoules you consume on an average day with a kilojoule counter book. The amount may be less than you anticipate.
Eat three nutritious meals per day. Give yourself somewhat larger servings if possible.
If you have a small appetite, eat five or six times per day. Drink liquids before and after meals.Prepare to eat even when you aren't hungry.
Set a timer to remind yourself to eat every two hours.
Make your additional dining sessions as appealing as possible. For example, stock the fridge and cabinet with your favorite snack foods.
Consume tiny amounts of protein foods before and after each resistance training session to aid in muscle building.
Accept that increasing your food intake may result in bloating or gas.
Be prepared to gain fat as well. It is impossible to gain muscle mass without also gaining body fat.

Some common explanations for a person's difficulty in gaining weight include:

genetics
Not eating enough.
Excessive physical activity due to lifestyle or employment demands.
Please keep in mind that some persons are too thin due to a disability, eating problem, substance misuse, or a serious medical condition; these issues are not covered in this fact sheet.

Skeletal muscles are a collection of parallel cylindrical fibers that contract to generate force. This muscle contraction enables all exterior human movement to occur.

Your body is constantly rebuilding and recycling the amino acids (protein building blocks) in your muscles.

If your body excretes more protein than it produces, you will lose muscle mass. If net protein synthesis is equal, there is no discernible difference in muscle size. Finally, muscular growth occurs when your body deposits more protein than it eliminates.

The key to growing muscle is to increase protein deposition while decreasing protein degradation.
