How does social media affect search engine visibility?

I often read how search engine optimization professionals write in their blogs about the importance of social media to search engine optimization. However, rarely does anyone find out how and in what way social media really helps search engine visibility
Google: "Social Media Likes and Shares Don't Bring Special Value to Search Engines "
Google Web Spam team leader Matt Cutts released a video in 2014 that revealed that social signals like links, shares, Facebook likes and Twitter Followers don’t particularly affect search engine visibility. However, splits and likes can indirectly affect search engine visibility. People will remember your business name better and will continue to search for it through Google, which will tell Google that this business is popular
Google: “Facebook, Twitter, and other social media are completely ordinary websites in Google’s eyes”.
Google does not treat social media links differently from links on any other site.
Google is unable to read or index everything that happens on social media. Some user profiles are private and hidden and are not accessible to Google. Popular posts may have been shared 10,000 times, but only some of them can be read by Google. For this reason, it would be wrong to give social media links a different weight than other links.
Social media also lives on constantly. Google is unable to read and index pages at the same rate as social media changes and lives. For example, a popular cat video post might get 1,000 shares a day on Facebook. In a week, however, this post will be buried under other Facebook posts. Google has limited resources for browsing the Internet and may not notice this cat video until a week after it is posted.
There are a lot of case examples online that show how Facebook shares and search engine visibility increase in the same proportion. However, this probably means that the content that is shared is so awesome that other sites like the news share it online. Thus, social media links alone have not made a site rise in search results. -Matt Cutts, Google
Almost all social media links contain a rel = Nofollow tag
Rel = Nofollow is a snippet of code given to search engines that prevent a link from affecting the search engine performance of that page. When you post a link to your homepage on Facebook, Google does not consider it a valuable link.
In summary, how does social media affect search engine visibility?
That is, Facebook Likes, comment volumes, and splits don’t directly affect search engine visibility. Social media is still a great marketing method to make your name visible and can indirectly get great search engine visibility, for example, as shown below.
-
Create a fun or useful article
-
Someone reads the article and thinks “hey this is awesome. I will share it with my friends on Facebook ”
-
The person's friends will see the article and they will share it with their friends
-
The article will be distributed enough until bloggers and others see it and make it an article on their own pages.
-
The article may get into the news.
-
People start searching Google for an article with that name
-
The search engine visibility of the article increases from steps 4-6
