How does love work?.
If you've been thinking with us for a while, you may have read about the science behind love. You may also know that there are many types of love. For example, most people feel love for their family members, a long-term bond often called attachment. They may feel the same way about friends or even pets. There is a different kind of love between romantic couples and life partners. Have you been in love? If so, you know that these feelings are quite different from those that people feel towards family and friends. Sometimes these first feelings grow into a long-lasting love, similar to that of families.
Simply put, romantic love falls into three categories: lust, attraction, and love. Each category is determined by hormones released by the brain. Lust releases testosterone and estrogen, while the second phase, attraction, releases dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine, the hormones that make us feel warm and fuzzy. In the final attachment phase, the brain releases oxytocin and vasopressin. While oxycodone gives us a boost of positive emotions, vasopressin is associated with physical and emotional mobilization. Biologically, it helps support the vigor and behavior needed to guard a mate or territory.
All types of love have at least one thing in common - they have a big effect on the brain. When a person feels love, chemicals such as dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin increase in the brain. They are produced in the hypothalamus region, which helps regulate the internal functions of the body.
This is one reason why love often causes a physical reaction. Seeing a loved one can raise your heart rate. It can also cause butterflies in the stomach and tremors in the limbs. Love can also disrupt some of our normal brain functions. In addition to producing chemicals, the hypothalamus regulates your appetite. This may explain why people in love sometimes describe less desire to eat or sleep!
Have you ever seen a close friend (or crush) and felt dizzy or alert? This is another effect of love on the brain. This tension can interfere with your ability to think clearly, make decisions, or even communicate. Why do people feel love? Many experts believe that it is based on survival. After all, most people first feel love for family members or caregivers. Families and close friends look after and protect each other. Especially for children, this is a great survival advantage. Later in life, when people begin to love romantic partners, it is because of similar needs.
Researchers have found that love can also have several health benefits. It can reduce stress and lower blood pressure. Spending time with loved ones can also prolong life. In fact, close family and community ties are one factor that can help people live longer in blue zones. With all this love talk, maybe someone you care about is on your mind. How can you show someone you love them? There are many possibilities! You can show love by showing appreciation, complimenting and being a good listener. Sharing, doing small favors or giving hugs can also show you care.
Of course, words work well too! If you really care in someone, kindly tell them. Making a card or writing a letter can also be a great way to share your love. If you're not sure what to do, ask yourself: What activities make you feel loved?
