How does loneliness cause depression?
Humans are social animals. Associating with others is a moderately important characteristic of happiness. However, sometimes each of us feels lonely; it's part of being human. But it may be a depressing feeling where a person's going through a lot of inconsequentiality and unfriendliness in his existence. Solitude generates 'cortisol' (a stress hormone). Social distancing, self-quarantines, and lockdowns are essential to decrease the spread of COVID-19 and help us remain safe. But this time of social distancing also gave rise to depression. Depression has some serious consequences; let us discuss some of them.
Three important impacts of 'being alone' on health that this awful feeling leads to:
1. Sickness of the Heart and blood pressure:-
Constant loneliness can be critical as it can cause greater chances of cancer and cardiovascular sickness. To lower your risk of heart disease and stroke, you need to get out and meet people. Reviews done from the University of Chicago uncover that loneliness could beget high vital signs. Their survey confirmed that solitary persons have a higher vital sign as weighed against to sufficiently friendly persons. If you've got a high vital sign, you're at a high probability of getting heart attacks and ailing kidneys.
2. Melancholy.
Loneliness and social isolation cause activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and therefore the sympathetic systema nervosum (SNS), and behavioral alteration, including physical inactivity, smoking, and sleep disruption.
3. Bad Immune System
It's visible that social distancing measures like lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic affect the body, including the immune and cardiac systems. According to surveys held by the University of California, constant loneliness changes a person's internal system that produces a harmful effect on the body, such as weakening of the body’s internal defense system. Thus, loneliness could hamper the role of our system and causes us to be in danger of diseases and infections.
Three ways to overcome loneliness:
1. Pets and Plants
Do you suffer from mild depression? Get a pet and experience unconditional love. Scientific studies say that having pets can increase the quality of life. Having a good friendship with pets releases hormones such as endorphins and oxytocin, making the owner happier. Plants, on the other hand, soothe and relax our minds. Having indoor plants or walking in parks improves one's health and mood. Cultivate vegetables or fruits and enjoy by observing them growing.
2. Helping others
Volunteering others leads to the feeling of usefulness. Researchers have discovered that serving others releases such biochemicals which make you happy. Another benefit of serving others is that you can connect with your community.
3. Focus on the feeling of cheerfulness
Focus on the things which make you happy and stay away from what makes you unhappy. Happiness requires a focused mind, not what you have. Develop the attitude of gratitude. By thanking what you have, you will focus least on the things which make you unhappy.
Regardless of your feeling of loneliness being new or prolonged, you can overcome it and take control of your mind with just a little courage or willpower. And in doing so, you will save your life.
