ICSI- Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection
Today I am going to write about a very important process called ICSI or “Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection”. As the name tells you, it is the process in which we take hold of just one egg and one sperm, and then we stabilize it under a microscope. In the ICSI procedure, we assert the sperm inside that single egg. So one sperm is to act inside the big egg so that fertilization happens, which bans the mixing of sperm in an egg so that the embryo is formed.
Who Needs ICSI Treatment
ICSI is the specialized form of IVF, a step further where we are doubly ensuring that fertilization happens to a maximum extent which actually might not happen in some patients, more so in males where the sperm count is very low. So if you have a patient who has a very low count as low as one million motile sperms, there we might opt for something called ICSI. Even lower than that, ideally according to our books we just need one good motile sperm which looks healthier under the big microscope. That sperm can be picked up and put inside the egg to create a new life.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is miraculous. So when we talk about this procedure we can do this procedure also for those who have regular fertilization failure.
IVF Vs ICSI
In a normal IVF, we put the eggs and sperm in one Petri dish/ in one small plastic dish. In that Petri dish, the sperms go and attach themselves to the eggs on their own. But, if there is a fertilization failure that is if the eggs and the sperms are not able to meet together to form a good healthy embryo we might need to do something called ICSI or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection under a big microscope. Whenever there are motility issues with the sperm, not only the count is important but also the motility. Because in a normal patient, the sperms will travel up from the vulva to the fallopian tubes, to form a good healthy embryo, so, motility of sperm is very important for a normal pregnancy to happen. But if there are problems again ICSI is an answer for them. When we talk of a patient having a little aged egg that is once the maternal age is increasing and the number of eggs is decreasing, they start having a little thicker outer layer which is called a thick zona pellucid. In such scenarios, ICSI could be the procedure of choice. Overall if we look at the success of pregnancies, yes, there is a slight improvement over and above normal IVF if we are using ICSI as a methodology.
