Music theory is the study of the various components of a piece of music. Like in the language, we have grammar and words to organize written or spoken words as well as notes and the intervals between them and harmony, rhythm, melody, and form for a variety of reasons used in music. Every musician or student of any level or genre must at the very least be aware of the basics of music theory to be literate and more competent in the field of music.
Understanding theory is similar to having the benefit of a map. The musician can discern the world before him and know where to go. Some musicians perform entirely by ear or are completely self-taught. Some are pretty amazing. But, any level of academic knowledge can aid in making them even more impressive. There isn't a lot of studies that are conducted through formal education. More valuable knowledge can be obtained through mentoring or private instruction.
It could be challenging to study music theory because there's a lot of information available, and it can be confusing. Where do you begin? It starts with the basics. To give you an overview, let's touch on a few of them.
