How do you write about sports?

A human activity involving physical exertion and skill as the primary focus of the activity, with elements of competition or social participation, where rules and patterns of behavior governing the activity exist formally through organizations and are enforced by law and sanctioned organizations. The term “sports” has been commonly used to describe any game involving skill and a system of rules that allows for interpretation of performance, while not all sports are considered “sports.” An example is an ice hockey game, which may be taken as a sport because it involves some rules of play and often requires technical skill and finesse in order to score a goal. It is also possible for a person to participate in an organized team sports activity, such as lacrosse or football, without technically knowing the rules, just like one would watch an NFL television show without understanding or discussing the laws or protocols. The terms “sports” and “sport” have become quite common synonyms for the same activities, but they denote distinct activities and different systems of play, so there are many distinctions between them and no two sports can be said to refer to the same thing in the legal sense. In general, athletes and people of similar athletic ability and skill level participate in sports, while the other participants who do not possess those skills, such as spectators or ordinary citizens, are excluded from participating in or even watching events.

Definition
The word “sport” (from Latin sportier, “to fight”) was first recorded on 15 April 1766, shortly after the Battle of Tarsusula. This is also the year before the founding of modern professional sports in England. After this time, the word became part of English speech as early as 1783, though there were already several sports organizations in existence (such as the United Cricket Club, which held regular weekly meetings that were attended by men) as well as at least one newspaper such as the Daily Mail. On 29 September 1783, William Beecham published his Dictionary of Sporting Terms[6] based on these new definitions. He wrote of football as a "game played by a large number of players, using weapons drawn on their forehand and feet; with more or less a goal given by throwing a ball." the usage of the phrase ‘sport’ appeared in print in 1787 when it was described as “a man playing” another variation of the meaning. However, the official record for its use is no longer available. The Oxford Collegian Dictionary defines “sport” as “anything involving bodily movement, or the mental activity involved in thinking about moves in a certain way, to which an audience pays attention.” Additionally, the American Heritage Dictionary describes “sport” as “the game of physically exerting oneself against another person or things.” For other purposes including sporting contests and competitions involving athletes, a field of sport has been defined as “the entire body of land or sea within which the action takes place.” Though the exact definition of what the term “sport” refers to is unclear, it is widely accepted that one should consider the dictionary to be the most accurate word to provide a definition. By popular opinion, sports can be broken down into various categories and subcategories, each with specific sports and activities. Sports have been categorized into four main classes: outdoor, indoor, contact sports, and non-contact sports. Outdoor sports include athletics, track and field, basketball, soccer, baseball, wrestling, shooting, and netball. While many such sports involve a great deal of physical exertion and skill, many are limited in the field of play. Indoor sports are divided into gymnastics, cheerleading, taekwondo, dance, karate, and Chinese martial arts, though not all of these sports contain the same amount of physical exertion or skill as outdoor sports. Contact sports are classified as softball, football, wrestling, and others that require the player to engage in vigorous shaking and a lot of collisions, where the player must interact with other players, including referees. Some non-contact sports involve an element of competition, but not many non-contact games are violent ones (such as wrestling). Due to the difficulty in categorizing what exactly constitutes a sport, most definitions do not provide any clear criteria for distinguishing between sports and leisure activity and therefore they tend to overlook that possibility.

Classifications
Sports are usually grouped by type. Athletics is the oldest form, dating back to Ancient Greece. Baseball and Football are the most common forms of football. Soccer is the first kind of national sport in the world. Other types of sports include Basketball, Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Table Tennis, Field Hockey, Equestrianism, Lawn Tennis, and Archery, among others. Each category contains a variety of games and events that vary depending on the country. Some examples of sports include Football, Freesports (a mixture of cycling, BMX riding, and snowboarding), Track & field, Badminton, Volleyball, and Cross Country Skiing, among others.

Classification and division
Sports can be split up into two major classifications—indoors and outdoors. Indoors, games typically take place indoors and involve physical exertion—while outdoors may involve only being aware of your surroundings and physical movements. The distinction between outdoors versus indoors allows for more flexibility in movement. For instance, in some sports, like lacrosse, a batter’s ability with the ball can be improved by having a bit of speed and maneuverability along with their feet and hands; a player will therefore need to have both speed and touch in order to keep possession of the ball, unlike an assassin who uses only one type. This difference makes indoor sports much easier to manage as compared to outside. Games involving water can, however, be conducted outdoors; hence, a batter will need to use their feet to control the ball and the pitcher must concentrate on striking the ball as fast as possible. Another example is the practice for lawn tennis, which involves hitting a tennis ball with one foot to get a stroke in with one foot to get an edge. These small differences between outdoors and indoors make sports very separate but allow for greater flexibility in movement, making them easier to manage. Sports-related injuries are a frequent and serious issue in the health and safety of individuals engaged in various types of sports and recreation. More than 1 billion hours of training are needed yearly to achieve the highest peak aerobic fitness capacity across all sports-related occupations in the U.S. There are 7 million injuries reported annually in the United States involving individuals pursuing various kinds of exercise and recreation activities. Most reported injuries are injuries related to concussions and traumas. Aspects of sports and recreational activities can increase risks. Research suggests that participation in some sports is associated with a greater risk of injury and mortality than participation in other activities such as other recreational activities.

Types of sports
Most sports have at least three levels of classification. Level one is the beginner-level sport with low skill requirements; typically involves low-risk sports (such as track and field, wrestling, skateboarding, and surfing). Level two includes the middle-skill sport with slightly higher requirements but relatively easy and low-risk factors; this level could be considered low impact (such as tennis, table tennis, and squash). Levels three or higher are considered high-skill sporting events, involving a wide range of activities or requiring full knowledge of the game. Types of sports include some basic examples of level one, but others can be further subdivided by skill levels or skill requirements. Such include ballet and competitive swimming, both of which are considered ballet because they require great balance and coordination of muscles and tendons—ballet and competitive swimming are both considered competitive sports—and horse racing, which is considered a horse-racing event. In addition, football is classified as a level three sport because it requires proficiency in passing, blocking, tackling, defense, and defending. In the category of beginner-level to high-skill sports, traditional sports like badminton or track and field are considered level one sports. They require minimal movement with a highly skilled athlete; however, in traditional sports, these athletes are also required to be skilled enough to move around freely without worrying about space or balance. Likewise, since every sport involves a large degree of strategy and pattern decision-making within the scope of motion, then the basic strategy of such sports should be quite intricate. Thus, this would limit the player’s mobility. At the onset of the 20th century, golf was labeled as the second high-skill sport, behind bowling, for the fifth position.
