How Do I Know If I Am Severely Depressed

When Depression, which is surprisingly easy to diagnose and treat, affects at least 20 million American adults each year. As we discussed earlier, although everyone has experienced sadness and feelings of depression, people who suffer from true depression have many frequent and recurring long-term symptoms that make them view life as something not worth living.

How do you know you have a problem with depression? Here are other symptoms of depression. These symptoms vary from person to person, although it may be wise to consult a doctor if you experience them.

– Grief that lingers

– Crying spells that are inexplicable

– Significant and sudden changes in sleep patterns and appetite

– Anger, irritability, anxiety, worry, agitation

– Pessimism, indifference

– Loss of energy

– Persistent lethargy

– Feelings of guilt and an inexplicable feeling of worthlessness

– Difficulty concentrating and indecisiveness

– Inability to enjoy interests you used to enjoy

- Social exclusion

– Unexplained aches and pains

– Extreme tiredness when you haven't done much

– Recurrent and frequent thoughts of suicide or death

If you experience at least five of the above symptoms and have started to interfere with family activities or work for more than a week, ask your doctor for a thorough examination. This would most likely include a comprehensive physical exam (although some symptoms may be caused by other health problems you have) and a detailed clinical history. Be honest and open about what and how you feel.

You don't even think of diagnosing yourself. Likewise, you cannot rely on a friend or family member for diagnosis. Only a doctor who is properly trained in disease control is the only one who can fully determine if you are having an episode of depression.

If you want, you can try self-assessment tests available on the Internet that could help you measure the symptoms you have or at least prepare you when you see your doctor. Consider these tests a way to better communicate your symptoms to your health care provider when you visit. Of course, the online tests did not prove to match the actual consultation.

Other people have recurrent depression, which simply means that they experience episodes of depression frequently—once or twice a month, at least once a year, or many times in their lifetime.

Don't feel ashamed, embarrassed or ashamed of your depression problem. People of different ages, ethnicities, races and social classes have this problem. Although depression can occur at any age, depression commonly develops in people between the ages of 25 and 44. If you struggle with depression, you are not alone. Every day, more than 20 million American adults struggle with depression.
