How would I get individuals to employ me for independent work when.
I’m just starting and don't have any documentation experience compared to others?

About 4 years ago, I decided to venture out into the freelance world…
-
And I’m not going to lie, at first - I honestly didn’t think getting clients was going to be that hard. Whether it was because I’d read a bunch of blogs, where all the gurus told me it was easy… Or whether it’s because I’d fallen for the “beginner’s trap”, where I noticed how the internet had created endless opportunity, and it’d be impossible for me NOT to land a few clients…
-
Whatever it was, I severely underestimated this - and 5 months later: Whatever it was, I severely underestimated this - and 5 months later: I was in a bad spot Not going to bore you with all the details now, but let’s just say - by this point I’d tried “everything”...
-
Where I attempted to get clients with: ·
-
Content marketing (or SEO)
-
Social Media Marketing
-
Paid Advertising
-
Upwork
-
Craigslist
-
Cold email · Etc…
-
And even though I’d landed a few clients during that time, none of the contracts were ideal - as I was always severely underpaid…
-
And on top of that, the clients were always Unfortunate
-
- so after going through this for a little, a bit longer…
-
I finally realized I couldn’t do this anymore, and after that - I decided to hire a coach (with the last of my savings). Now I’m not going to lie, this scared the absolute hell out of me - as I essentially burned all my bridges…
-
And hinged my entire freelance career on this guy, but in retrospect - that was one of the smartest things I could’ve done… As it forced me to go “all-in”, and figure it out no matter what. Anyway, I’ll get to that more here in a second - but for now…
-
Let's just say, that we had our first call a couple of days after that - and to start things off… We began by going over my current “client acquisition” methods. I really had to laugh after he asked me this, because I didn’t have any solid methods in place - but after telling him how my current approach… Was really finding clients on Upwork, after that - he asked what my “Pitch” was, or in other words… How I sold my skill. From there, I just mentioned how my normal approach - was seeing what they were looking for…

Then after that, I’d really just send them a relevant sample of my work - that way they could see what my writing looked like…
-
And hopefully hire me after that. Anyway, mentioned a few things from there - really just trying to justify my approach… But after going on for a solid 10 minutes, the guy took a brief pause - then mentioned something I’ll never forget:
-
“I bet you don’t get paid that much, do you?”
-
Now after hearing this, I had to laugh - as I had no idea where this was coming from…
-
And almost thought he was making fun of my writing after that, but after asking him what he meant… He gave me a piece of advice, that essentially changed my life overnight: Clients don’t give an Excrement
-
about your skill, they only care about what it does for them In other words, in the past - I always thought that in order to land clients, I had to show them how I was a good “Writer”.
-
Why I did this, I’m not sure - but if I had to guess…
-
I’d say it’s because we’re all conditioned to be employees, where we get good at a skill - then plug it into “the machine”...
-
And even though it works in that situation, when it comes to freelancing - clients aren’t looking for employees…
-
They’re looking for working consultants, who can help them reach their goal. With that said, after hearing this - it was hard for me to wrap my head around it at first…
-
As it was a completely new subject to me, but after a little, a bit of thought - I told the guy how I’d landed clients with this method in the past… So I didn’t think he was 100% right, but once I did this - he countered by asking how many good clients I’d landed with this approach?...
-
And after that, I started to realize exactly what he was saying. In other words, even though I was able to land “some” clients with my current approach - as he soon pointed out…
-
The only clients who pay for skills, are the clients who have no idea what they’re doing - so they’re the people you don’t want to work with anyway…
-
But on top of that, since they’re not 100% sure your skill will help them reach the outcome they’re looking for - then they’ll never pay a lot of money for it… And that’s the exact reason why I was currently struggling. Anyway, he went through a few things after that - but by the time we were done with this phone call…
-
He gave me a list of items I had to do, and even though it sucked at the time - as I didn’t feel like doing more work… Let’s just say, that it paid off very quickly - because within a few weeks, I went from a “freelance writer” who got paid pennies.
