On top of that layer are cells called erythrophores, which contain a blue pigment and a blue pigment that reflects white light. This erythropoiesis consists of pigments and monocrystals that reflect the light of different wavelengths. But when a chameleon experiences a change in body temperature or mood,
its nervous system expands or contracts specific chromatophores. This changes the color of the cell. Chameleons are famous for their quick color change abilities. These bold statements will not help them mix in the background but will allow them to convey their message loudly and clearly to other chameleons.
Unlike octopuses and cut fish, which change color by moving around the pigment in their cells, chameleons have specialized cells called erythrophores that work for them. chameleons at each level are filled with pockets of different types of pigment.
The deeper layer contains melanophores, which are filled with brown melanin (the same pigment that gives many shades to human skin). The common misconception is that they do this to hide against a background. By altering the function of different chromatophores in all layers of the skin, the chameleon can create different colors and shapes.
For example, an excited chameleon may turn red by spreading all of its erythropoietin completely and blocking out other colors beneath them. Owners of chameleons can learn to read the mood of their pet based on its skin color.
How do they pull off these colorful changes? The outer layer of the chameleon's skin is exposed. The top layer of those cells contains xanthophores and erythrophores, which contain yellow and red pigments, respectively.
Typically, the pigments are locked into small pockets inside the cells. Women can let men know if they are ready for mating by changing the color of their skin. In aggressive encounters, men become brighter to identify their dominance.
A quiet chameleon, on the other hand, may turn green by shrinking its erythrocytes and allowing some blue-reflected light from its erythrophores to mix with a layer of somewhat condensed yellow chanterelle.
With these cell layers, some chameleons are capable of forming dazzling arrays of red, pink, yellow, blue, green, and brown. Chameleons often change color to regulate their temperature or to signal their intentions to other chameleons.
Since chameleons cannot generate their body heat, changing the color of their skin is one way to maintain a favorable body temperature. A 2015 study published in Nature Communications looked at how five-year-old male, four-year-old female, and four young leopard chameleons changed their colors.
They found that chameleons have two layers of these different cells - the erythropoietin. The chameleon changes its color by stimulating or loosening its skin and changing the density of the top layer of erythropoiesis. Below this are many more layers of skin, which contain specialized cells called chameleons.
