In collaboration with Fox, Tubi released the official trailer for the original movie “Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial,” a fictionalized retelling of this summer's closely followed defamation trial involving actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. The ripped-from-the-headlines film is set to premiere Friday, September 30th, on the free, ad-supported Tubi service. However, one person is not jumping on the hype train. That person is Morgan Tremaine, the former TMZ reporter who appeared in court and is well remembered for putting Amber's lawyer Elaine Bredehoft in her place. So, what exactly is this movie about, and why is Morgan skeptical about it? Let's find out.
Judging from the trailer, “Hot Take” aims to evenly present both sides of the controversial story of the formerly married couple. “This is not life — no one should have to go through this,” Mark Hapka, cast as Johnny Depp, featuring slicked-back hair tied off in a ponytail, says in court. At another point, Megan Davis, cast as Amber Heard, says, "I have the right to say what happened to me.”
After watching the trailer, former gossip monger Morgan Tremaine tweeted his thoughts, and Fox movies should honestly look away.
He wrote…” Trailer for that low-budget Depp/Heard trial movie on Tubi looks HORRIBLE”.
The trailer that Morgan shades also references the TikTok trend that emerged during the trial, in which users mocked Amber's emotional testimony on the stand. "Girl just wants some attention!” says one fictional social-media commenter.
“Hot Take” follows the relationship of Depp and Amber leading up to and including the two-month defamation trial — which Tubi's trailer declares “the most-watched trial of the year.” The jury found that Amber defamed Depp by alluding to domestic violence allegations against him in a December 2018 op-ed piece, while the jury also held Depp liable for a defamatory statement made about the Justice League star by his lawyer.
Tubi fast-tracked the movie into production with Fox Entertainment's Mar Vista Entertainment “to capture a timely take on a story that became part of the cultural zeitgeist, painting a unique picture of what millions watched play out in the headlines over the summer," according to Tubi chief content officer Adam Levinson.
The one-minute trailer sees Davis as Amber and Hapka as Depp as they arrive in the courtroom for the first day of the trial, with scenes showing Depp greeting fans outside the court and Amber on the witness stand, with flashback scenes of the couple also reimagined.
Hapka was a dead-ringer for Depp in his signature goatee, sunglasses, and ponytail, while Davis was spot-on as Amber, particularly in her courtroom attire.
The Depp vs. Amber defamation case was one of the most closely followed and controversial events of the entire year. Taking place between April 11th and June 1st. Both parties accused the other of being horrifically abusive, both physically and emotionally. The jury found that Amber was guilty of all three charges of defamation, but they also found Depp guilty on one of three charges of defamation for an unfounded statement his lawyer made to the effect that the actress had trashed his apartment in order to frame him.
The Fox production piece that has been criticized by Morgan also shows a few major pieces of evidence in the trial, including the knife that Amber bought Depp for his birthday, Amber's suspected affair with James Franco, and Depp's alleged paranoid jealousy, and Amber's contentious diagnosis of borderline personality disorder and Histrionic Personality Disorder.
In the trailer, viewers see that there will be some recreations of actual events in the two parties' past relationship as well.
