How data of registered engineers is leaked?

PEC is a well-known acronym for most of us especially, engineers. Its complete form is Pakistan Engineering Council that represents engineers all over Pakistan. It was established to regulate the engineering profession in the country.

PEC governing body elections are held after three years in which only the registered graduate engineers can vote. PEC election is not different from the general elections of Pakistan, where every one of us knows what happens. The last time the elections were in 2018, many engineers participated, and after three years, it is happening again in 2021. In those three years, one can hardly see any change in the fortunes of graduate engineers.

PEC has its website, where the graduate engineers have to register themselves after completing a degree to get a certificate of a registered engineer. This website requires all the personnel details such as contact number, email address, etc. Rather than securing the information of the registered engineers, PEC is making the information public, and anyone visiting the website can easily see it. The engineers participating in the election see the contact information and start spam calling, messaging and emailing, etc. Rather than focusing on their performance and making efforts for engineers to decrease unemployment, the participants use shortcuts to win a seat in the elections. The elections have been happening for so long, but unfortunately, there is no change in the condition of unemployment in the country. Most of the engineers run small shops to earn a living.

One of my friends highlighted the social media issue that he was receiving calls, messages, emails, and WhatsApp messages from the candidates, contesting for general body elections. He said that"It made me wonder how these guys got hold of my contact details and who is leaking the data of registered engineers. He further said that he noted their names of will never vote to form them in the elections." Another friend took the matter more seriously and made a complaint on the Pakistan Citizen Portal about leakage of information on the registered engineers. He wrote that" It is a matter of the fact that the last PEC elected body has miserably failed to deliver and fight for the rights of engineers in Pakistan. Further, he said that all engineers are receiving useless, nonsense, and illogical messages, calls, etc. He requested the higher authorities to take strict action against the culprits in PEC for leaking data and information of Pakistan registered engineers."

PEC has no right to make the information public, but unfortunately, there is a clear violation of individuals' information. PEC's responsibility is to assure privacy protection for the registered engineers so that the already struggling, depressed, and frustrated engineers should get rid of spam-calling and such things. There is a severe need for amendment in PEC rules and figuring out where the problem lies. Either restrict the engineering universities to limited seats for admission or increase the job opportunities for graduating engineers. There is also a need for change in the approach towards providing employment chances to graduate engineers.

Anyone of us receiving such calls, messages, or emails should file a complaint in the Pakistan citizen portal or report on some other websites so that the government can secure the privacy of every Pakistani.
