How data and technology are reforming mobility modes in metropolitan cities

One of the areas where technology plays a crucial role in transportation. Data, combined with technology, has successfully transformed the mobility modes in metropolitan cities.

1. Improved connectivity: Data and technology help improve connectivity, a requisite in the transportation sector. Data openness and standards enable improved connectivity between transport modes – publicly and privately operated. This allows users to access the information at the system level and make mode and connection choices that are best suited per the requirement of each trip.

2. Making trips competitive: The improved connectivity with the help of data and technology makes ‘trip planning’ a convenient process. A few trip planning apps available nowadays have made planning trips a piece of cake! These apps provide optimal route advice based on data availability of mobility, first and last mile connectivity, GPS data of vehicle and commuters past travel patterns etc. This system-level service information generates increased comfort and predictability for multi-modal trips. It ultimately makes these trips more competitive with private vehicles.

3. Reducing the cost of transportation: Just like the other sectors, data and technology are also helping to reduce transportation costs. They are contributing to making it more accessible to users by bringing in the elements of convenience and ease with the advancements that have occurred over time. Data collection costs are dropping rapidly because most new data sources are  inevitable byproducts of the transportation industry’s automation and digitization.

4. Substitution of human efforts: Another very evident benefit of data and technology is that it has substituted humans in performing many jobs like food ordering, commuting, shopping. Especially menial ones, so human efforts could be invested into more important tasks. This has made things more optimized and efficient. By substituting human actions with automated communication using online platforms and other such ways of information exchange, digitalization and the availability of advanced information technology can help improve the efficiency of focused data collection.

5. Sustainable transportation : Most importantly, data and technology are assisting in the transition to more sustainable modes of transportation. All public and private transportation is a major source of data collecting, which aids market leaders in making decisions based on that data. Electric car adoption appears to be the most straightforward path to cutting emissions.

6. Better Optimization of Fleet Management : Data insights can aid in more efficient vehicle operation planning. Fleets that are professionally managed have the amount of control and knowledge that permits policy decisions to become real change.  Fleet managers can look at multiple parameters. Physical variables like tire pressure, or engine efficiency can have substantial impact on reaching sustainable goals (a 10% pressure loss in the tire for example, can translate to about 3% increase in gas consumption).

 These should be augmented with data obtained from vehicles to provide a better knowledge of drivers’ behavior.  Promoting beneficial habits, like turning off the vehicle while idling and discouraging practices like aggressive driving, can enact a change that is beneficial to both the environment and to the fleet itself.

 The observable and the automated data are widely employed in modern transportation science, albeit there is a progressive movement toward automated data. As a result, we focus more on the accessibility and usefulness of automated data sources in the context of metropolitan cities.
