LANDOVER, Md. - - Dallas Cowboys right tackle La'el Collins was shot out in the final quarter of Sunday's 27-20 triumph over the Washington Football Team for throwing a jab while attempting to protect Dak Prescott.
Washington guarded end William Bradley-King pushed Prescott as the quarterback was making a toss close to the sideline, and Collins let him know of his dismay. So did running back Ezekiel Elliott, yet Collins bull-surged Bradley-King, who was a training crew call-up, and ultimately threw a punch.
"It wasn't actually the late hit for me," Collins said. "I felt it was all the more thus, I felt like he was moving toward Dak's leg. It was inappropriate. I'm only here to ensure my quarterback no matter what, and that is the reality."
Prescott said he liked it.
"I clearly regard and love the way that my colleagues are supporting me and that is the way we all vibe around each other," Prescott said. "That is not them ensuring me. That is the way any of us would respond assuming any of our siblings are in that position. No doubt, grateful for those folks."
A year prior at FedEx Field, the Cowboys were condemned for not going to bat for quarterback Andy Dalton. Dalton was offered a modest chance by Washington linebacker Jon Bostic, who hit the quarterback as he was sliding to the ground. Bostic was tossed out of the game, yet no hostile player defended Dalton.
After the game, Mike McCarthy said he was ignorant Collins threw a punch and came to explain his underlying remarks, saying he accepted Collins was ensuring a partner.
"LC did precisely what you should do there," McCarthy said.
