How crops are produced and managed

INTRODUCTION

We have been driven to look for and seek out nourishment throughout human history. Photosynthesis is the mechanism through which green plants produce their own food. Humans and animals are unable to produce their own sustenance. Animals and people are so dependent on plants, either directly or indirectly. The organisms employ the energy in food to power all of their numerous processes in the body. All living things eat mostly plants and animals. Production, planning, management, and distribution of food are required to feed a greater population. However, producers must produce enough products to meet the escalating demand while preserving the quality and quantity of resources for future generations. Institutions conducting agricultural research are creating new technology.

AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES

Our nation's economy has always been based on agriculture. To fulfill the increasing demands, we have been growing a variety of crops ever since the Green Revolution. The following three types of crops are grown in our nation:

Crops in Kharif

Kharif crops are those that are sown during the rainy season, which runs from June to September. Kharif crops include cotton, groundnuts, soy beans, maize, and paddy.

Crops in Rabi

Rabi crops are those that are grown throughout the winter season, which runs from October to March. Wheat, gram, pea, mustard, and linseed are rabi crops.

Summer crops under Zaid

Zaid crops are those that are grown throughout the summer. Examples of zaid crops are cucumber, watermelon, and muskmelon.

The following categories apply to crops according to utility:

FRUIT CROPS 

Rice and corn are grown for human consumption.

FOOD GRAINS

These are beneficial for feeding livestock. Sorghum, millets, etc.

Crops OF FIBER

These are utilized for textiles and cordage. E.g., hemp and cotton.

Basic Crop Production Techniques

Plowing, sowing, fertilizer application, harvesting, and seed storage are all different operations involved in agricultural production. The combined impact of all these activities has an impact on crop yield.

 Soil preparation

The topsoil must be loosened, which is the most crucial step in the agricultural process. Earthworm and soil microbe growth is aided by the loosening of the soil. These creatures are helpful to farmers and add humus to the soil. Through their roots, plants take up water, minerals, nutrients, and air from the soil. Therefore, it is crucial to properly prepare the soil before beginning the cultivation process. The ways to prepare the soil are listed below.

a. Grazing

To facilitate the availability of nutrients in the root zone of the cultivating crop, the soil is loosened and turned up and down through the plowing or tilling process.

Plough

The primary purposes of a plough are soil preparation, crop fertilization, weeding, and waste material removal.

Hoe

It is a straightforward instrument used for soil digging, weeding, and tilling. It has a long wooden rod that is attached to one end by a bent iron plate. It's possible to fasten the other end to an animal.

Cultivator

Tractors are used to power cultivators. Additionally, cultivators remove unwanted plants from the field and pull weeds. Today, cultivators powered by tractors are used to plow. Utilizing a cultivator reduces labor and time costs.

A leveling.

The topsoil is rather loose after the area has been plowed. An instrument known as a leveler, which is a large wooden or iron board, is used to level land. The field should be leveled to ensure regular water distribution during irrigation.
