CLIMATE CHANGE:

Deserts are getting bigger, and heat waves and wildfires are getting worse as a result of climate change. Warmer temperatures in the Arctic have caused permafrost to melt, glaciers to retreat, and sea ice to disappear. Higher temperatures are also making storms, droughts, and other extreme weather events more intense. Many species are having to move or go extinct as a result of rapid environmental change in mountains, coral reefs, and the Arctic. These include the warming of the oceans, acidification of the oceans, and rising sea levels. Climate change puts people at risk of a lack of food and water, increased flooding, extreme heat, more diseases, and economic loss. Climate change is the greatest threat to global health in the 21st century, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Communities can adapt to climate change by protecting coastlines or expanding access to air conditioning, but some effects cannot be avoided. Despite having the least capacity for adaptation and the greatest vulnerability to climate change, less developed nations account for a relatively small portion of global emissions.

At the current temperature of 1.2 °C (2.2 °F), many effects of climate change are already being felt. These effects will get worse and can reach tipping points, like when the Greenland ice sheet melts. Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, countries agreed to keep warming "well under 2 °C." However, even with the promises made in the Agreement, global warming would still be around 2.7 °C (4.9 °F) by the end of the century. To keep warming to 1.5 °C, emissions must be cut in half by 2030 and net-zero emissions must be achieved by 2050. A charred colony of Acropora coral and a dry lakebed in California, which is experiencing its worst megadrought in 1,200 years, were destroyed by the Bobcat Fire on September 10, 2020.

For powering transportation, heating buildings, and operating industrial facilities, non-carbon-emitting electricity will need to replace fossil fuels. Carbon can also be removed from the atmosphere by increasing forest cover and farming with methods that capture carbon in soil.

Change: What Is It?

Temperature and weather patterns that change over time are referred to as climate change. These shifts might occur naturally, like when the solar cycle changes. However, the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas has been the primary cause of climate change since the 1800s.

Emissions of greenhouse gases are produced when fossil fuels are burned, trapping the sun's heat and raising temperatures like a blanket. Carbon dioxide and methane are two examples of greenhouse gas emissions that are influencing the climate. These come from, for instance, using gasoline to drive a car or coal to heat a building. Carbon dioxide can also be released when forests and land are cleared. Methane emissions originate primarily from garbage landfills. Among the most significant emitters are energy, industry, transportation, buildings, agriculture, and land use.

 

Climate change is affecting people in a variety of ways.

Climate change can have an impact on our housing, safety, health, ability to grow food, and employment. Some of us are already more susceptible to the effects of climate change, such as those who live in developing countries or on small islands. Sea-level rise and saltwater intrusion have gotten so bad that whole communities have had to move, and prolonged droughts are making people more likely to starve. It is anticipated that the number of "climate refugees" will rise in the future.

 

Every rise in global warming is important.

Thousands of scientists and government reviewers agreed in a series of UN reports that limiting global temperature rise to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius would help us avoid the worst climate impacts and maintain a livable climate. However, current policies indicate a temperature rise of 2.8°C by the end of the century. Everyone is impacted by the global emissions that are causing climate change, but some nations produce significantly more than others. Three percent of all emissions are produced by the 100 nations with the lowest emissions. The 10 nations with the biggest emanations contribute 68%. Everyone must address climate change, but individuals and nations that contribute more to the issue bear a greater responsibility to act first.

Although scientists prefer to use the term "climate change" to describe the complex shifts currently affecting our planet's weather and climate systems, many people consider global warming and climate change to be synonymous terms. Extreme weather events, shifting wildlife populations and habitats, rising sea levels, and a variety of other effects are all part of climate change. As humans keep adding greenhouse gases that trap heat to the atmosphere, all of these changes are starting to appear.

 

These effects of climate change have been documented by scientists already:

  1. -Around the world, ice is melting, particularly at the poles. Mountain glaciers, ice sheets that cover Greenland and West Antarctica, and Arctic sea ice are all examples of this. There are now fewer than 30 glaciers in Glacier National Park in Montana, down from 150 in 1910.
  2. -Sea-level rise is made possible in large part by this melting ice. Every year, sea levels rise by 0.13 inches (3.2 millimeters) around the world. In recent years, the rate of rise has accelerated, and it is anticipated that it will continue to do so in the coming decades.
  3. -Wildlife and their habitats are being affected by rising temperatures. In Antarctica, species like the Adélie penguin have been challenged by disappearing ice. Some populations on the western peninsula have collapsed by 90% or more.
  4. -Numerous species are migrating in response to rising temperatures. Some alpine plants, boxes, and butterflies have moved north or to higher, cooler places.
  5. -Rainfall and snowfall have both increased globally on average. However, some areas are experiencing more severe drought, which raises the possibility of wildfires, crop losses, and water scarcity.
  6. -Some species, such as crop pests, mosquitoes, ticks, jellyfish, and others, are doing well. Millions of acres of forest in the United States have been destroyed by growing populations of bark beetles, which feed on spruce and pine trees.

Despite the cooling influence of the La Nia climate pattern in the tropical Pacific, every month of 2021 was warmer than average, according to the 2021 Global Climate Report from the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information. The "coldest" month was February, which was 1.15 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than average; Temperatures were over 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit above average for the remainder of the year. With a temperature that was 0.84°C (1.51°F) higher than the average for the 20th century, the year ended up being the sixth warmest year on record for the entire planet. The years 2013–2021 are all included in the top ten warmest ever recorded. It was also the 45th year in a row (since 1977) that global temperatures exceeded the average for the 20th century. It is important to note that 2005 was the first year in the 21st century to set a new global temperature record. It is now tied with 2013 for the 10th warmest year on record, and 2010 is the 9th
