According to China's announcement, this week's joint exercises in the East China Sea between the Russian and Chinese navy will "further deepen" cooperation between Moscow and Beijing.
A brief announcement that was posted on Monday by China's Eastern Theater Command of the People's Liberation Army stated that the exercises will take place from Wednesday until the following Tuesday off the coast of Zhejiang province, which is south of Shanghai.
The Coast Guard stated that two additional Chinese naval ships and four Russian ships, one of which was a destroyer, were later observed moving "in a single formation with the R-E N H-A-I as a combined surface action group operating in the US Exclusive Economic Zone".
The 127-meter (418-foot) Kimball, based in Hawaii, reported that the Chinese and Russian ships dispersed after breaking their action group formation, which is an arrangement for tactical missions.
In the statement, the US Coast Guard said that the Kimball was now following the rules of Operation Frontier Sentinel, which says that "strategic competitors" in and around US waters must match "presence with presence".
From the Coast Guard station in Kodiak, Alaska, a C-130 Hercules aircraft from the United States had provided the Kimball with air support.
