How Canada's polar-bear capital Churchill warms too fast for bears

"The bears are waiting because they know the ice will return soon", says A-L Y S-A McCall of Polar Bears International (PBI).

The "polar bear capital of the world" is Churchill.

Because of these changes, bears and people are getting closer together, making places like Churchill, where polar bears and people live together, more dangerous for both of them. Everything about Hudson Bay's hundreds of polar bears, Churchill's seasonal sea ice, and the fate of Churchill are fundamentally dependent on the actions of every nation on the planet to reduce emissions of the planet-warming gases that are rapidly altering this location.

 

Therefore, from a scientific point of view, there is a beautiful relationship between the amount of emissions we produce and the effects on the sea, ice, and bears that result from this. Ms McCall says the western Hudson Sound subpopulation of bears, which she and her associates study, has declined by up to 30% in the past 30 to 40 years due to less access to the ocean ice. 

 

According to Scott Polar Research Institute Professor Gareth R-I S, "the Russian Arctic now makes up half of the Arctic, and we are losing the ability to monitor it more and more". "We cannot assume that every region is responding to climate change in the same way, so it is essential that we collect data from every region". 

 

Dr L-E H N-E R asserts that climate change has altered the way conservation needs to be considered, in addition to altering the polar regions. "These are not distinct issues; if you care about animals, conservation, and climate change, you must also care about them"
