Did you know that the man on the $100 dollar bill had only two years of formal schooling?
Franklin is perhaps best known for his experiments with electricity and inventions such as the lightning rod, bifocal glasses, and the Franklin stove.
He was also a prolific writer, publishing several books.
Franklin was a political figure who helped to draft the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, and served as the U.S. ambassador to France.
Benjamin Franklin is proof that it's possible to achieve great things even without a formal education. Here are nine more examples of men and women who succeeded without any formal education:
- Richard Branson - Founder of Virgin Group. Branson struggled with dyslexia as a child. He dropped out of school at the age of 16 to start his first business, a magazine called "Student".
- Coco Chanel - Recognized as one of the most influential figures in fashion. With no formal education she began working as a seamstress and designing and selling her own hats.
- Abraham Lincoln - 16th President of the United States, his formal education, was limited to about 18 months of schooling.
- Walt Disney - Founder of the Walt Disney Company. Walt dropped out of high school at the age of 16 to join the army.
- Michael Faraday - Considered one of the most important scientists in history and known for his work on electromagnetism and electrochemistry.
- Steve Jobs - Co-founder of Apple Inc. dropped out of college after only one semester.
- Thomas Edison - Inventor and businessman, had only three months of formal education.
- Henry Ford - Founder of Ford Motor Company had no formal education and a natural talent for mechanics.
- Oprah Winfrey - Media executive and famous talk show host, had a difficult childhood and limited formal education. Forbes estimated in 2021 her net worth to be around $2.7 billion USD. These are just a few examples of people who achieved success despite having little or no formal education.
Here are ten ways how I would focus my efforts to succeed without any formal education in the decades ahead:
- Be curious and ask questions. Learn to seek out information on your own.
- Develop creativity to solve problems. Think outside the box and don't be afraid to come up with radically different ideas.
- Develop social skills. Remember that only people pay for your products or services, not machines.
- Learn how to communicate your ideas clearly.
- Develop negotiation skills, which are an integral part of our personal and professional lives.
- Learn to sell. Analyze and understand why people buy.
- Embrace technology and learn how to use it to your advantage.
- Develop conflict resolution skills to understand, analyze, and resolve disagreements between people.
- Build leadership skills to guide and inspire others.
- Learn teamwork to collaborate with others working towards a common goal. Success without formal education is possible but challenging. Take Steve Jobs, who co-founded Apple and dropped out of college. However, such examples are exceptions. Education often provides essential skills, knowledge, and networks for success. While unconventional paths exist, they require determination and luck. Education remains a valuable foundation for many.
