In this post, we are sharing five ways road safety could be improved by drivers and traffic managers.

Respecting traffic signs and rules of the road, being aware of traffic hazards, being alert on highways, and staying within your speed limits are some of the best ways to live safely behind the wheel anywhere. Stressing that scientific improvements are helping improve safety, but that individuals must also commit themselves to use roads safely.

Even with the increase in cars driving through public roads, city planners are using the aforementioned recommendations for improving roads to keep both pedestrians and drivers safe. While a number of new and innovative security measures are being implemented across the city's landscape, city planners can look at existing street redesigns to get ideas for making their own urban streets safer. To turn the tide, it is not enough to simply ask drivers, pedestrians, and others using roads to ride or walk differently; city planners must deliberately design streets and cities with safety in mind.

Designing and building roads that are accommodating regular-traveling motorists is not always the best way to promote safe traveling. Traffic safety is a critical component of the goals of transportation planning, with road designers looking for ways to enhance the driving experience, so everyone can get to their destinations safely. By creating traffic safety policies and procedures, companies will not only enhance the safety of their own employees driving for their jobs, but the safety of others using their shared streets, highways, and road systems.

Educators can play a critical role in protecting children and stopping devastating fatalities by teaching students vital messages, as well as by communicating the importance of road safety to more broadly, for example, parents and drivers in their communities. Future efforts by the Coalition will include establishing best practices for improving road safety cultures across companies and partners; convening stakeholders in major cities to focus on strategies for reducing injuries and deaths; identifying ways technology and data can support road safety; advocating for increased funding and support for national road safety initiatives, and raising global awareness about this critical issue.

With motor vehicle crashes occurring at higher rates than any other transportation incident, it is no surprise we are constantly looking for ways to enhance traffic safety. In this post, we look at how plastic crash barriers can be used to decrease pedestrian-vehicle collisions. Big data analytics and machine learning algorithms could enable intelligent traffic management systems to better control traffic through a crowded city, improving flows, safety, and decreasing congestion.

For instance, traffic pricing, vehicle restrictions, and car free scheduling applied on only certain roads or at specific times could merely change vehicle travel times and routes, providing few security benefits, but when implemented alongside other complementary TDM strategies that enhance transit alternatives and create incentives for overall reductions in car trips, significant security benefits may emerge. Although less of a concrete change in roadway design than a general urban design approach, compact, mixed-use neighborhoods may increase street safety by making driving less necessary. Elvis (2001)notes that while freeway capacity increases are frequently justified based on the projected decreases in crashes, these projects need to meet specific criteria in order to truly increase highway safety.
