Technology has the potential to provide a lot of autonomy for the disabled in their everyday lives, as technology on the Internet is much more convenient than real-world alternatives. There are infinite ways that technology can help disabled people have greater, independent access to recreation, education, and employment.
Fortunately for disabled people, many AI-powered navigation apps can help them achieve greater autonomy and greater spontaneity in their travels. In fact, AI technologies that allow them to have more autonomy, whether at home enjoying a subtitled movie or at work reading an accessible document, make the world more accessible and inclusive to them. Employees with disabilities are more productive when they are able to access technologies that allow them to succeed. Accessible technology also provides alternate ways for individuals with disabilities to manage the functions of their keyboards.
This capability allows more people, including people with vision disabilities, to access information on mobile devices and laptops. The information can be delivered via speech, helping people who are blind or have low vision to navigate streets, recognize objects, and negotiate stoplights and intersections.
There are hearing aids for those who cannot hear partly or entirely, sign languages and ways of understanding these languages so that people who cannot talk also can communicate with others, and last but not least, Braille systems have helped visually impaired people greatly. Some individuals with learning disabilities have found the adaptive devices designed for people with visual disabilities to be helpful.
Devices that allow for flexibility in the placement of monitors, keyboards, documents, and desk surfaces are helpful to many individuals with disabilities. For example, individuals with impaired mobility may control everything at home simply using their voices using a virtual personal assistant, such as Amazon Alexa. For people with disabilities who have restricted mobility, this technological advance provides independence and gives them a way to be in control in difficult situations.
Assistive Technology (AT) describes devices, equipment, and software that assist a person with disabilities in living independently. Many of the emerging tools fit the umbrella of assistive technology (AT), which includes systems, equipment, and products that improve daily living for individuals with disabilities, according to the Assistive Technology Industry Association.
These are only some AI technologies used to enhance people's lives with disabilities across different fields, with plenty more solutions out there and being developed, be it from startups or big companies like Google and Microsoft. These are all examples by Microsoft that show how technology can expand opportunities for people with disabilities and make our world more inclusive. Seeing all of these new advances firsthand makes me excited to see what technologies will do to increase inclusiveness, care, and accessibility.
Technology is changing lives for us every day, in ways large and small, from new assistance devices to opportunities to achieve greater accessibility than ever. As someone with a limited vision right now, I can honestly say that technology has been the difference-maker for me. Working with students one-on-one, I have had the pleasure of seeing the amazing difference that technology can have on a person who has a physical impairment or specific learning disorder.

TomGlobal.org - A non-profit that brings together technologists who want to tackle issues facing disabled people, has received funding support from Google.org. The Google I/O-specific space seems to demonstrate Google's true commitment to using technology to improve life for people with disabilities.
Companies like Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google have been focusing increasingly on making tech products and services from companies like Amazon more accessible for people with disabilities. Recently, companies like Apple and Microsoft have introduced numerous accessibility features to help disabled individuals in particular, and Apple announced an array of notable features in May this year. While many may never use these features, or even know that they exist, well-designed, integrated accessibility features are a game-changer for many people who are disabled. From mobility devices such as walkers, wheelchairs, scooters, crutches, and canes, to orthopedic devices and prosthetics, new types of technology are continually helping improve the quality of life of disabled people.
As much as people with disabilities are often able to take advantage of tech developed for general consumers, the reverse is true. Disabled people are different too, and they require the right kind of assistance and guidance that helps them to get through some of their problems in life. Disabled people require various kinds of support, therefore, it is a top priority that they also are treated equally and be given proper legal aid and help.
