A healthy diet is vegetables, fruits, and small portions of protein and whole grains provide fiber and important nutrients like vitamins and minerals. When planning meals for yourself and your family, consider including them. Salads or other colorful vegetables, such as cauliflower; Sweet potato, red, green, orange, or yellow pepper. Fat-free or low-fat milk and dairy products, or non-dairy products, like almond or rice milk. Fruits of various colors, including apples, bananas, and grapes lean beef, pork, or other protein foods, such as chicken, seafood, eggs, tofu, or beans. Whole grains like brown rice, oatmeal, whole wheat bread, and whole-grain corn raiment are good if you take them once in a while. Just don't eat foods like candy, ice cream, or cookies every day. Limit dessert to special occasions, and keep portions small. Keep a cookie or a piece of candy instead of trying everything.

If you can't eat milk or dairy products because you have trouble digesting lactose, or the sugar in milk, try lactose-free milk or yogurt. In addition to milk and dairy products, you can get calcium from whole grains, juices, and beverages made from soy or nuts. Eating dark green leafy vegetables such as collard greens and bananas, and soft canned fish like salmon can also help meet your body's calcium needs. Healthy eating doesn't take long. Nor do you need to be a chef to prepare healthy food. Here are some ways you and your family can eat better without spending too much time preparing food: Buy frozen or pre-cut vegetables and add them to veg wrap with salad or pita bread for quicker eating. Or microwave vegetables and add them to whole green pasta. When you cook, make coffee for extra meals. A casserole with vegetables and whole grains, and a whole cooked chicken, can last a few days, so you don't have to cook another meal every day. Be sure to freeze or refrigerate leftovers immediately to keep them safe to eat. If you don't feel comfortable cooking, try something simple, such as making a stew fry by mixing your favorite fresh, frozen, or canned vegetables.

Avoid heavy gravy, salad dressings, or sauces. Leave them alone or ask them aside, so you can control how much you eat. Try to avoid fried foods and fast food. Instead of fried chicken, order baked, billed, or grilled chicken with turkey sandwiches, or whole-grain bread. Share a meal with a friend or take half of it home. Tip: Store brands may spend less than most popular or well-known brands. You may have to look for things that are higher or lower than the eye level to find them. Often, the ingredients of the product are the same, or very similar, to popular brands. Remember that alcohol, juices, sodas, and other sugary drinks are high in sugar and calories. Reading the information on the nutrition facts label can help you choose foods rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. The US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Nutrition Facts label appears on most packaged foods and tells you how many calories and servings are in a can, can, or package. The label also shows how many nutrients the food contains.
