HOW IS BIPOLAR DISORDER AN ILLNESS THAT CAN LEAD TO SUICIDE?
When Joe was about 11-12 years old, he got so angry that he raised his hand on his mother.
His mother did not see this behavior of Joe for the first time.
He used to throw things in anger earlier. Also, the younger brother had to be pushed or slapped.
Sometimes he became so violent that it was difficult to control. There were complaints of quarrels and beatings with other friends from school also.
At the same time, another form of his mood was also seen when he used to be completely calm, did not answer anything. Many times he used to cry for no reason and used to lock himself in the room.
At first, the mother ignored this behavior as a child, then felt that the change in hormones is probably the reason for this.
But gradually, the mother started to realize that Joe's behavior was different. She started seeing a pattern in his mood swings, and this was happening again and again.
The day Joe raised his hand on her again, she understood that now the water has gone above the head.
She was afraid that her son might harm himself by getting in a rage. She started panicking and thought of seeking medical advice.
After talking to psychiatrists, the mother came to know that her son has bipolar disorder.
WHAT IS BIPOLAR DISORDER?
According to doctors, bipolar disorder is a type of mental disorder that occurs due to an imbalance in the dopamine hormone. Due to this imbalance, a person's mood or behavior changes.
If a person has bipolar disorder, he has attacks of mania or depression; his mood is either very high or low.
TYPE ONE BIPOLAR
In bipolar one, there are attacks of mania. In this disorder, a person talks big things, works continuously, feels little need for sleep, and despite that, he remains fit.
A person suffering from this disorder spends more than necessary and takes any decision without thinking. His mind does not remain fixed in one place.
Psychiatrists, referring to a patient suffering from this disorder, says that the person was from a business family, and he started making many irrational decisions in business.
He started talking big things and became very expensive. He had stopped sleeping and began to consider himself the most powerful.
Along with all this, his 'sex drive' had also increased. When he was admitted to the hospital, he used to talk big things like giving jobs to people and giving his property in their name.
The doctor says that the connection of such people with reality is completely broken. In such a situation, if such symptoms last more than two weeks, then it is called 'mania' or rapid attack.
TYPE TWO BIPOLAR (HYPOMANIA)
In this, there are attacks of sadness. In this disorder, the mind remains depressed, and there are symptoms like feeling like crying for no reason, feeling like no work at all, feeling like lying in bed despite not getting sleep, getting too little or too much sleep.
The patient suffering from this feels a decrease in energy. People affected by this disorder stop socializing.
WHEN SHOULD ONE BECOME ALERT?
Although you and I will often go through similar feelings in normal life, you and I recover in two or three days, but if this condition persists for two weeks, then it can turn into hypomania.
According to Psychiatrists, if any of these symptoms attack once, then it is understood that that person has bipolar disorder.
According to doctors, bipolar can occur in a person of any age, but on average, more cases of this disorder are reported in the age group of 20-30.
However, nowadays, it is also being seen that now cases of 'Early Bipolar Disorder' are also coming to the fore.
According to Psychiatrists, "Though this disease is ancient, now the disease is being properly recognized, people have become aware of it, and hence this disease has started coming to the fore. This disease has become prevalent today, and three or five percent of the 100 people have this disorder.
They explain that if such a disorder appears for the first time in a person after the age of 40, it can often be directly related to changes in the brain called 'organic mood disorder.'
In this, it is seen that whether there has been any change or any defect in the structure of the brain.
BIPOLAR AND SUICIDAL TENDENCIES
When children are reaching adolescence, due to changes in hormones, their mood also starts changing. They get irritated, angry, or angry on anything, but such a situation does not last long.
Such cases come in 'cyclothymic disorder' where any kind of emotion, whether it is anger or sadness, is mild.
This is usually seen in adolescence and can be ignored. But if a child has bipolar disorder, it comes in 'classical mania' or depression.
These include prolonged sadness, extreme anger, aggression, lack of sleep, excessive talking or spending, and being more attracted to sexual content than usual.
If such symptoms last for more than two weeks, then there may be a possibility of bipolar.
Recently, after the news of the suicide of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, such discussions had intensified in the media that he had bipolar disorder.
Psychiatrist says, "In episodes of mania or melancholy, there is a possibility of an attempt to commit suicide. Because in both cases, the person loses connection with reality. In mania, the patient feels that he can do whatever he wants, his thinking power ends.
"In such a situation, the patient can take such extreme steps. Wherein the risk of suicide is highest in bipolar depression. And if such a person ever talks about suicide or hopelessness, then it can be a 'red signal,' and he should be treated immediately. should go."
THE DISEASE CAN BE CONTROLLED
Modern Psychiatrists also believe that whenever a patient with bipolar disorder comes, they are especially vigilant about whether suicidal thoughts are coming in him.
They say that bipolar is a disease of life. Thyroid, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and mental illnesses... all these are counted in 'non-communicable diseases. You can control these diseases and lead a normal life, but you cannot eliminate them.
Psychiatrist says, "These brain diseases are also genetic. If someone in your family has ever had some mental illness, then in the future, its symptoms can be seen in children.”
"Bipolar among brain diseases is such a disease in which when the patient's condition comes under control, he starts leading a normal life. In such a situation, they can be told about their illness so that when they feel that their condition is getting worse, their mood is changing; then they can understand it and come to the doctor and get advice.
According to doctors, for its treatment, 'mood stabilizers' or stabilizers are used in the membrane of the brain so that the amount of dopamine can be balanced and the disease can be controlled.
Doctors say that patients with bipolar disorder in any creative work can help them.
Such patients need more care and love. Often, people make very wrong decisions in mania, but they realize and regret their mistakes when they become normal.
In such a situation, they need to be explained with peace and love. At the same time, care must be taken to keep the mind calm and not tire it. Such patients should also be motivated to meet people.
