How being lonely affects your health?

Some people like to live alone, but being extremely introverted can be the reason for bad health. Humans are considerably social mammals. The reason we are still alive to this date is because of our social skills. Being lonely may result in more stress, heart related problems, dementia and other health issues.

There is a difference between objective loneliness (also known as social isolation) and subjective loneliness. Loneliness is a subjective experience; you may feel disconnected from people even though you may be surrounded by them. Both loneliness and social isolation may result in damaging your health.

LONELINESS AND HEALTH

Loneliness and social isolation don't just affect your social life; they wreak havoc on your health. Loneliness reduces chances of surviving.

Loneliness may result in an early mortality. Loneliness, social isolation and living alone can contribute to an early death. Living alone is the most dangerous, with 32% increase in mortality, followed by social isolation at 29% and loneliness at 26%.

Lonely people have poor health for some reasons. They generally have bad habits like drinking and smoking, and don't eat much or do enough exercise. Loneliness also affects sleep, which can result in poor immune system and may further result in heart diseases, obesity and diabetes. People may also like to be isolated because they may be ill, have limited mobility or less income.

FIGHTING AGAINST LONELINESS

While mental health plays its role, loneliness is a combination of situation and perspective. Individuals who like to be alone resist going out and being social. Whatever be the reason for living alone, it's important to go out and socialize. Social media is also a way to get rid of loneliness, but it's best to reach out to people personally. Below are some ways to fight against loneliness :-

  • Exercising :- Exercise is a great way to reduce stress. It boosts endorphins (chemicals that help in feeling good) and reduces stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol. Even during social isolation, you can still go out for running, workout and maintain muscle strength.
  • Meditation :- Research says that meditating can reduce anxiety and depression. A study of mobile meditation apps found that 10 minutes per day of meditation reduced depression of college students and made them more resilient. The more they used the apps, the stronger the results; though further research is required to know whether these positiveness can last for long periods of time.
  • Connecting with nature :- Going outside, especially in sunshine and greenery, can make your mood better by reducing activity in the prefrontal cortex, a section of the brain which is related with anxiety. If you can't go outside, listening to sounds of nature (like that of raining and birds chirping) or even seeing pictures of nature can help.

CONCLUSION

Loneliness and social isolation may have their disadvantages, but it can be advantageous as well; like improving your concentration and memory, increase in creativity, making you more productive and empathetic. But generally, being lonely is not good. You should interact with other people and be socially active. May you all stay safe and healthy.
