HOW Bangladeshi scientists discover new causes of diabetes

There are many causes of diabetes. But this time the scientists of Bangladesh have discovered a new reason.

The discovery was unveiled at a press conference held at Bardem Hospital in the capital on Wednesday afternoon. 

According to the press conference, the new cause of diabetes discovered through research is the decrease in IAP (intestinal alkaline phosphatase). And declining IAP is one of the leading causes of diabetes. Scientists hope that this discovery will play a big role in the prevention and treatment of diabetes. Lead researcher Madhu S. Malo told reporters that in the last five years, 584 people between the ages of 30 and 60 have been diagnosed with this new cause of diabetes. The results of the study have already been published in the British Medical Journal.

From this discovery it is understood that the scientists of Bangladesh are also capable of doing great work. 

A team of researchers from Birdem, Diabetic Association of Bangladesh, Rajshahi University, Jahangirnagar University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and Harvard University in the United States were involved in the study. 

There is no database of rare blood group 'bomb' in the country

Sanjida Akhtar of the capital was five months pregnant when she was anemic. Before giving blood, tests showed that his blood group was 'O' positive. As soon as he started giving ‘O’ positive blood to a clinic, Sanjida started bleeding from his nose and mouth.

After three failed blood transfusions, he was admitted to another private hospital in the capital. Cross-matching of Sanjidar's blood with 'O' positive blood donors revealed that his blood group did not match with anyone's blood. Sanjidar's blood sample was then sent to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. Tests there revealed that his blood group was 'Bombay'. 

Bombay is one of the rarest blood groups. Blood of 'Bombay' group was identified in the Department of Transfusion Medicine of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. According to the information provided by the department, so far there is blood of 'Bombay' group like Sanjidar in the bodies of 40 people in the country. If there is any complication while giving blood to the patient, then blood sample is sent to the transfusion department of Bangabandhu Medical. So there is no way to know how many donors of this blood. The information of those who visit this department as patients is being stored.

 

According to doctors and blood researchers, one out of every 10,000 people in India is exposed to Bombay blood. There are only 26,000 people in the world who have the blood of the 'Bombay' group. There are no such statistics in Bangladesh.

In 1952, three Indian physicians, Y. M. Wendy, C. K. Deshpande and H. M. Bhatia, wrote an article in the Lancet, a British-based medical journal, on the blood of the Bombay group. The blood group was first identified in the body of an injured railway worker at a hospital in Mumbai, India. Recognized in Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay), the doctor named the blood group 'Bombay'.

This group of blood is also called English lowercase letter HH or uppercase O and lowercase H letter (Oh group) group blood.

 

Ayesha Khatun, Professor, Department of Transfusion Medicine, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, has done some research on the blood of 'Bombay' group. He told Prothom Alo that according to the latest published data, 33.96 percent of the people in the country belong to O blood group. A different form of ‘O’ group is ‘Bombay’ group. Now the awareness about the adverse effects of blood has increased a bit. There is talk of 'Bombay' blood group to increase the chances of diagnosing the correct blood group. Proper grouping of those whose blood type is ‘O’ will further increase the number of ‘Bombay’ blood groups.

Professor Ayesha Khatun further said that if one's blood type is 'Bombay', then first of all one should look for 'Bombay' group among other members of their family.  If the mother and father are carriers of the heterozygous Oh gene, in 25 per cent of their cases the blood of the child may also belong to the Bombay group.  Experts also say that no one knows what the blood type will be. It's a genetic issue. Bombay is a blood group like any other common group. However, in our country, those whose blood type is in Bombay are afraid to come in front of the media due to social pressure and harassment.

 

Being a rare group, Sanjid has to work hard to collect blood. Sanjidar's body turned pale due to anemia. There was no alternative but to give him blood. In addition, those who donate blood to him must also belong to the 'Bombay' group. Finally, on March 17, Sanjidar's family collected a bag of blood from the Bombay group. However, doctors said Sanjida would have to give three more bags of blood. In addition, the donor should be ready to give blood to the child at the time of birth.
