How Artificial Intelligence Will Change The World: What You Probably Didn't Know

Today's artificial intelligence is better known as a small AI (or weak AI) because it is designed to do a little work (e.g., face-to-face detection or online search only or driving only). However, the long-term goal of most researchers is to create standard AI (AGI or robust AI). While small AI can outperform people in any of its tasks, such as playing chess or arithmetic, the AGI will outperform people in almost all cognitive tasks.

 

What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is the technology that allows machines to work autonomously, using or making decisions based on information they have gathered. The vision is to create a global intelligence that will become more intelligent than humans and eventually replace us. With intelligence comes the capability to learn. This ability to know makes the machines capable of driving cars, understanding human speech, and drawing pictures. We think these tasks require cognitive skills, such as spatial and problem-solving abilities, reasoning, and judgment. Creating a machine that can understand and feel enhances a person's cognitive skills and abilities to perceive and react to the world around them. Why is artificial intelligence critical?

 

The difference between weak AI and AGI

Weak AI systems currently exist and are not considered to be viable for general purposes. Weak AI can perform a minimal set of cognitive tasks and often require human interference. The idea behind AGI is to build a system that can perform as well or better than a human as an expert human. If the task can be broken down into its components, and it is possible to build a computer that can perform them, then the concept of AGI is not far-fetched. Today's weak AI and current AGI work in two different ways: Skills: The artificial intelligence performs only a single task, called a little skill, and does not generalize across other tasks. Why do we need AI?

If this were not the case, computers could be developed that solve all of the problems we face today, but the advantage would only be temporary because new issues would always arise. How will AI change the world?

If AI is good enough to outperform people in many tasks, why do most people consider AI a threat? For many people, AI is a threat because it could take away their job. However, this view is quite common in the business community and is used by firms to justify paying humans less and avoiding supporting the AI sector. Instead, if AI is good enough to out-perform humans at any cognitive task, humans will be at work and paid more. We will have human-AI labor jobs. Many people in the workforce will have to find other work, and many companies will need to make many AI careers. Others will need to learn to work with AI, and a small percentage of workers will get AI jobs. Many jobs will go away. Other new jobs will emerge. Some jobs will even get created.
