With a little awareness, I used to think that OTC medication like paracetamol or anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen were the only options to deal with the pain. Increasingly, I have learned that there are many ways to deal with pain using natural methods. While these methods may not provide immediate relief, at least, you eliminate the problems or side effects that you might otherwise have with drug treatment. Here are some natural ways to help you get relief from your pain.
1. Heat vs. Cold. Some people swear by the use of ice packs and cold massages. These packs can be bought from the store or you can use a package of corn or peas from your freezer. Wrap the cold pack in a cloth and then massage the painful area with light hands for five to seven minutes. Once the area begins to feel numb it is time to stop. Others like the heat. Applying a hot water bottle or heating pad to the lower back for fifteen to twenty minutes can relieve back pain within a few days.
2. Exercise. Tai chi or yoga are two great exercises for back pain. The stretching aspect of yoga reduces stress on muscles, increases blood flow and promotes healing. Tai chi is similar in that it also promotes the treatment and prevention of back pain using gentle movements and non-impact exercises. It teaches you how to improve your posture and balance. Tai chi also helps build muscle strength and balance.
3. Supplements. The supplement is used to rebuild bone and cartilage, reduce pain and inflammation, as well as relax muscles. They are divided into two groups. The first builds up strength and the second relieves pain. It is best to discuss this with your doctor first when deciding to use nutritional supplements. Make sure your back problem isn't due to a more serious cause that requires medical intervention. Your doctor can then help you determine the correct dosage of the supplement.
Some useful strength producers are glucosamine sulfate, calcium, magnesium and vitamins C and D. All of these will help in the formation of bone and cartilage. Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B, aids in the healing of cartilage and like white willow bark, boswellia, bromelain and turmeric are also anti-inflammatory. Devil's claw reduces muscle pain, is an anti-inflammatory and will enhance the effects of regular pain medications. S-Adenosylmethionine strengthens muscles.
4. Hydrotherapy. This allows someone with a back injury or severe back pain to exercise in a way that greatly reduces physical effort. Although you will perform very similar exercises that you would do out of the water, buoyancy sports your weight, which makes the workout easier. Plus, hot water treatments are a good way to reduce pain and relax muscles.
