Are you satisfied with your life?
When I was about 10 years old, I often played with a good friend. We built shacks and did the craziest things. Even when we got older, we often met. I always looked up to my friend who was 2 years older than me. He was funny, good-looking, and he was a good talker. Everything seemed to go well for him.
Meanwhile, it’s 30 years later and my friend’s company is down, he is in debt restructuring, has no wife, and few friends. He regularly uses drugs and seems to have lost his purpose in life. Not what I had expected…
I have not seen him for a year or so, and I would like to share something with him about what concerns me. About what I learned about life …
Chapter 1 ~ Why our life is meaningful
It’s a beautiful spring day as I start writing this story for you. I sit in our garden where the flowers are in full bloom and see a beautiful butterfly flutter from flower to flower … The butterfly lands on a large yellow flower and indulges in the nectar. I carefully walk up to it and look at the butterfly closely. What a beautiful shape and special colors! After he is done, he flies away again with a thick layer of pollen on his hairy body. His journey continues to the next flower …
Did you know that there are 400,000 different types of flowers and plants on earth? Can you imagine? I am still amazed at how many differences there are between the flowers I see. They have beautiful colors and every species has its shape.
Because I was amazed at all these differences, I started to study nature. All the differences you can see are awesome, but the systems that make plants, animals and people live are even more amazing!
The great miracle in our body
Have you ever bought a construction kit? For example, a cabinet. This kit usually comes with a lot of boards, screws, and a booklet that tells you how to build the cabinet. It’s similar to our body. Our body consists of billions of cells and in every cell of your body, there is a manual for your entire body. We also refer to this manual as the DNA. This DNA is the blueprint for our body. The DNA makes you look like you are now.
The first cell that started your life already has this complete manual. It tells how your body should be built, with a head, arms, legs, the color of your eyes, and what shape your nose would be. But it also tells you how all your cells, organs, and limbs should work together. Unbelievable isn’t it?
So the DNA is the manual for our body. You can compare this a bit with the code of a computer program. That code is necessary for your computer to work. The code ensures that you can visit the internet with your computer or write a letter.
Researchers have calculated that if you wrote down the DNA in a book, you would need more than 1 million pages 1 for the human DNA 1! That is more than 2500 thick books full! And that code is in every cell of our body! 2
Did Life Originate by Chance?
Many scientists believe that life on Earth arose by chance. They assume that life started through a series of many small steps and chemical processes. Yet more and more scientists are seeing that DNA is so incredibly intricate that it’s impossible that it could have been created by a series of random chemical reactions.
Let’s return to the example of a computer program. I assume you are not a computer programmer, but did you know that the DNA of one human cell is just as complicated as the well-known computer program “Windows”? Could it then be possible that by a lot of coincidence a program similar to Windows would arise? This program contains about as many instructions (code) as human DNA. 3 4 Thousand gramsked on Windows for years.
No code has ever been discovered that has not been designed. No computer program has ever arisen spontaneously, without a design and programmers working on it. If our DNA is as complicated as a computer program, could it be possible that we humans came into existence by a lot of coincidence?
