Science and technology are two distinct disciplines, but they form a tight relationship where each builds off the advances of the other. The goal of science is to organize and expand knowledge by forming and testing hypotheses based on known and relevant data. The goal of technology is to apply research and knowledge for the production of goods and services and to improve techniques used in industry or science. Technology was often seen as the offspring of science, but the relationship has become more symbiotic as both science and technology have advanced in the past few decades. The core of all biological and chemical sciences and all technological processes and advances lies in physics. From the foundations of physics, as far as we currently know, all other sciences and technology are built. Science is accomplished by observation, forming hypotheses from those observations, and testing them. Technology needs science to advance the goods it produces, but none of the steps in the scientific method can be accomplished without the means of modern technology as well. For example, cells and microbes could not have been studied without the advent of microscopes, which could not have been produced without the knowledge of how light passes through and is augmented by lenses. Each discovery in each field leads to advances in both fields. Some advantages of science and technology include improved transportation and communication, quality health care, easier methods of conducting business, and improved learning capabilities. The increased convenience of travel and improved levels of health care that have resulted from investments in science and technology have had a significant impact on society. With improved technology, time is no longer a constraint on communication. Communication is clear because of the use of devices that send clear megapixel images and videos. Whether individuals are spreading information, sharing knowledge or broadcasting news, technology has made it easier and faster. Technology has made the world a small place in terms of interaction. It is possible to conduct business transactions with people far away due to technological progress. Technological advances also enable people to access education from across the world. E-learning provides students with personalized educational resources that allow them to manage and control the process and content of their studies. E-learning tools and resources allow for immediate feedback on the learner’s performance. It also connects students from different locations and makes the learning experience more enjoyable. Additionally, the combination of medicine and technology is paramount in the revolution of health care. Diseases such as cancer are only treatable as a result of scientific and technological advances. Technology gave scientists the tools that they needed to isolate and learn about DNA. It helped advance their knowledge and provide a higher quality of life to those with genetic illnesses. Students are able to use technology to help them better understand scientific concepts. Technology gives access to items such as maps, videos and simulated labs that appeal to students who learn best from methods other than conventional lectures. Science and technology have enabled mankind to enjoy a longer lifespan. With knowledge and equipment, doctors are able to effectively treat illnesses that used to be deadly. Numerous prescription drugs have been created thanks to scientific research, while technology has permitted mass distribution.
