Scientists say that feeding seaweed to cows can reduce the amount of methane in their gas and thereby protect the environment.
Under this research, scientists fed seaweed to about a dozen milch cows. After this, a 30 percent reduction was found in their belching and the methane generated from the gas.
According to University animal scientist Armias Kebriab, who was involved in the research, "I was surprised to see the results of the research. I had no idea that feeding a small amount of seaweed could do wonders."
He says that taking lessons from the research results, his team now wants to see its effect by feeding seaweed to buffaloes for six months. This research will be started in October this year.
"If we can reduce the amount of methane in the atmosphere by making small changes in food, it will have a positive effect on carbon emissions," says Michael Huchens, an animal scientist at the University of Illinois.
Cow a threat to the environment?
According to the 2014 report of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, four stomach animals like cows, goats, and sheep keep on chewing food throughout the day, ie, chewing food and burping.
First, there are millions of bacteria living in the stomach rumen, which break down fiber-rich food like grass and leaves into smaller pieces and make them easier to digest. In this process methane gas is released from the stomach of the cow.
According to a United Nations report in November 2006, more carbon dioxide, responsible for climate change, is emitted from the stomach of a cow than from automobile or factory smoke. According to this report, the biggest threat to the atmosphere is from cows and buffaloes.
Like humans, cows also have stomach gas problems. And the number of harmful gases that come out of their belching, the same harmful gas does not come out of any car.

The case is that there is a town Resdorf in Germany, where a dairy exploded.
Police say that cows tied in dairy are responsible for this blast. Police claim that the blast was caused by the methane gas released by these cows.
Not ten or twenty but 90 cows were tied in the dairy. The explosion caused by methane gas was so strong that the roof of the dairy was broken and a cow was also injured.
According to the news agency Reuters, a statement issued by the police said, "Due to the electric charge, the gas caught fire and caused the explosion."
METHANE AND AMMONIA
Local media say emergency personnel rushed to the scene and measured the amount of gas present there to rule out the possibility of a further explosion.
Cows are believed to emit up to 500 liters of methane gas every day. Similarly, methane gas is released extensively from slaughterhouses where cattle are slaughtered for meat on a large scale.
Methane comes under the category of greenhouse gases which are considered to be a threat to the environment.Cows emit not only methane but also large amounts of ammonia gas, which can poison both soil and water.
Efforts to reduce methane emissions can be known from the fact that in 2016, there were talks of efforts to use methane from cows in vehicles in California.
Along with this, discussions were also held on the research of regulating their food while maintaining the taste of milk.
According to research published in 2014 in the Asian Australian Journal of Animal Sciences, the amount of methane production due to cows has increased steadily till 2010, and Indian cows are ahead in this compared to cows found in other parts of the world.
According to the 19th Livestock Census conducted in 2012, there are about 51 crore cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, and horses in India.
