When you receive an email, you have the option to classify it as spam, usually by pressing a button that unsurprisingly says "spam". Once enough people classify an email or IP address as spam, it falls into trust until it is completely blocked from addresses. Profiling Profiling involves learning the common characteristics of spammers and junk mail. It's software that looks for things like errors, invalid message IDs, and other properties and uses those properties to evaluate incoming mail. Each post is then scored based on how it performs against these criteria. The user is then given the option of how high or how low to set the bar based on which emails are received. This method has proven to be extremely effective against amateur spammers and many professional spammers. However, it relies on a ready team of professionals to identify new features used by spammers and incorporate these features into the profiling algorithms. Bayesian Filtering The most promising spam blocking software follows no rules. Rather, they are constantly learning new anti-spam techniques by scanning the emails you've read and comparing them to the mail you've rejected. This highly sophisticated software uses data it collects from thousands of users to identify which items are spam and which are not. It then has the ability to tailor its standards to your specific preferences.
