We prefer to view the development of new technologies as a slow, steady, and largely linear process. This isn't always the case, though. Periodically, ancient civilizations invented inventions that were decades or even centuries ahead of their time, according to archeological excavations conducted all over the world
There are those who claim that these inventions either equal or surpass contemporary science. This is also a false belief. Even though several historical super tech olives, such as Damascus steel and Roman concrete, were originally thought to be gone, modern academics have since replicated them. Usually, the difficulty in reproducing them is not due to a lack of understanding of the idea itself, but rather to a lack of original instructions.
The idea that these technologies were invented by eccentric geniuses unfit for their time or that ancient civilizations just happened to stumble upon them is equally false. Greek fire flames that don’t go out
The Umayyad Caliphate's Muslim fleet was engulfed in flames when it attempted to besiege Constantinople, a Byzantine city, in 674. The Muslims were first unconcerned because fire was frequently employed in naval combat and was easily put out with cloth, dirt, or water. But this was no typical fire. Once it got going, it was impossible to put out, and once the whole fleet was consumed, the sea itself caught fire.
A new military technology known by various names, including Greek fire, Roman fire, liquid fire, and sea fire, ultimately brought about the collapse of the Umayyad Caliphate. Historians surmise that the formula may have contained gunpowder, sulfur, or petroleum, but none of these survived. Out of the three, petroleum appears to be the most likely contender, given that sulfur lacked the destructive strength reported by Arab witnesses, and gunpowder wasn't easily accessible in Asia Minor until the 14th century.
