It has been more than 40 years since it was proven that smoking causes lung cancer and other serious diseases. At about the same time, the misconception that smoking can lead to serious illness and premature death in adults and children has been confirmed. Thanks to a report from the United States Chief of Surgeons entitled “Health Effects of Non-Smoking Exposure to Smoking,” he has strengthened our view of the negative effects of smoking on smokers and non-smokers.
Polluted air can cause difficulty breathing, flare-ups of allergy or asthma, and other lung problems. Long-term exposure to air pollution can raise the risk of other diseases, including heart disease and cancer.
The report has come to conclusions about the serious health risks of secondhand smoke, such as:
Secondhand smoke is a proven cause of lung cancer and heart disease in nonsmokers and sudden infant mortality, low birth weight, respiratory infections, ear infections and asthma in infants and children. It causes tens of thousands of deaths in the United States of America each year.
There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke.
Exposure to cigarette smoke has serious and immediate consequences for cardiovascular and respiratory health.
Cigarette smoke contains more than 50 carcinogens
Comprehensive non-smoking workplace policies are the only effective way to protect non-smokers from smoking. Other methods, such as ventilation systems, and parts of smoking and non-smoking rooms, do not work and do not eliminate exposure.
Their conclusion is that it is time to enact a comprehensive smoking policy that will apply to all workplaces and public places. The report concludes with another significant statement: “Evidence from peer-reviewed studies shows that non-smoking policies and regulations have a negative impact on the economy of the hospitality industry.”
With this report, all conflicts and excuses for not taking action are eliminated. Numerous studies and strong economic data have shown that non-smoking laws do not harm sales or employment in restaurants and bars. In fact, they sometimes had positive responses, such as what happened in New York City after the law came into effect, business receipts for bars and restaurants increased, their employment increased, and the number of liquor licenses increased. This was despite the fact that many institutions were law-abiding, and most New Yorkers supported the law.
Another positive effect is that non-smoking laws lead to savings. According to figures from the Society of Actuaries in the United States, tobacco use causes $ 10 billion a year in health care bills, lost wages, and expenses.
All over the world, there is a concerted effort by various government agencies to enforce laws because of the overwhelming evidence that smoking laws protect the health of the general public without harming the business community. Even trading companies have joined the bandwagon by maintaining a smoky working environment and providing some smoking space. Some countries, states, states, and territories have adopted a comprehensive ban on smoking within restaurants and bars.
Smoking is a major but inevitable cause of death . Since smoking harms more people than just smokers, the rules of non-smoking should be observed at all times to protect everyone's right to breathe fresh air.
