What is ambergris?
Ambergris, a material sometimes found floating in the sea, is formed in the sperm whale's intestines around a core of undigested solid matter such as squid beaks. Sperm whales are usually bigger. A male adult will be 40000kg and a female adult in 14000 kg with feet of 16meter. The feed of the whales is giant squids. When it hunts the squids, it produces series of clicks called codes inside the deep sea. These clicks are get reflected by the objects and got hunted by whales. While eating this giant squid for some time, these whales can't digest the squid since the beaks of the squid exist. At least the undigested squid should be going out from front or back. But for a long time, this undigested food accumulates inside the whale. After a particular year, this undigested food came out from the whale's body and started to flow to the top of the sea. This floated substance is called ambergris or floating gold.

Why is ambergris so in demand?
When a whale initially expels ambergris, it is soft and has a terrible smell. Some marine biologists compare it to the dried cow dung. But after floating on the salty ocean for about a decade, the substance hardens and becomes smooth, waxy, and usually rounded. The dung smell is gone, replaced by a scent that has been famous for hundreds of years, probably more. The longer it floats, the better the scent. Ambergris has been called the treasure of the sea and floating gold. It is hugely valuable; it commands a higher price than gold. This is because it is highly prized as a fixative and ingredient in fine perfumes.
It is said to allow the scent to last longer, thanks to the ambrein molecule, which on exposure to a certain type of activated oxygen, exudes fragrance compounds known to be lighter and more volatile.
To add to that, the floating gold tends to get lost in the ocean for decades before finding its way to the shore; it is excreted in depths far accessible to humans.

Why is ambergris illegal in the US, INDIA, AUSTRALIA?
Due to its high value, Ambergris has been a target for smugglers, especially in coastal areas. Since the sperm whale is a protected species, hunting the whale is not allowed. However, smugglers are known to have illegally targeted the fish to obtain the valuable Ambergris from its stomach. So some countries INDIA, US, AUSTRALIA are banned from selling ambergris.
