The enormous cylindrical aquarium, which was the focal point of a well-known Berlin hotel, was a wonder. It was claimed that the Aqua D O M aquarium was the world's largest freestanding cylindrical aquarium. Around 5:45 a-m local time, the Aqua D O M aquarium catastrophically burst, releasing 1 million liters (or more than a quarter of a million gallons) of salt water and fish into the hotel's atrium and lobby and out into the street, prompting dozens of emergency responders to rush to the scene.

According to the owner of the building, the Aqua D O M aquarium was completely destroyed, and the reason for this is still unknown. According to Radisson, the damage has forced the hotel to close, and all guests are being relocated.
The hotel's guests reported being awoken by a loud crash or rumbling, only to discover that the enormous fish tank had vanished. According to Deutsche Welle, witnesses claim that the disaster scattered dead fish, damaged furniture, and debris all over the hotel's atrium.
There are rumors that some of the fish may have been able to withstand the sudden destruction of their habitat because they were protected from the flood by small pools of water. RBB, a German public broadcaster, says that some fish were apparently found near an elevator and taken to a tank at the Sea Life Berlin facility in the same complex. However, RBB also says that those fish and other animals were in danger because the building's power was out.
Since Berlin's temperatures were well below freezing, any animals that made it out of the water would have a hard time surviving the cold if they were carried outside by the water. Friday's high temperature was predicted to be just 29 degrees Fahrenheit, despite the fact that the water in the fishes' tank was kept around 79 degrees.

Dan Ashe, president and CEO of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, issued a statement to NPR in response to the tragic news, stating that his organization is "shocked and saddened" by the catastrophe.
