In 1972, 18 days after he was elected vice president of the Democratic Alliance and Prime Minister George McGovern, Thomas Eagle ton was forced to cancel his ticket. The problem? Many years earlier, Eagle ton had been hospitalized and treated with electroshock therapy for depression. The disclosure of his mental health history was a blow to Senator Missouri's inability to recover.
Eagle ton's brutal appointment has been a warning to elected officials since then, said California Supreme Court Judge Tim Fall, who works in YOLO, County. But rather than remain silent as he nears his re-election last year, Fall has released a book that describes his decades of anxiety and depression.
As it turned out, Fall had not been challenged for another six years in office. But it was a previous challenge to his chair, in 2008, that led to his severe mental illness. That campaign created the background for "Running for a Judge," Fall said to write to show that fighting mental illness does not prevent people from having high-pressure jobs.
Fall, 61, with a law degree from the University of California-Davis, was 35 years old when Gov. Pete Wilson, from the Republic, appointed him as a municipal judge in 1995. Three years later, he became a judge in the YOLO Regional High Court; The 2008 election was the only time he ran for office. Fall also teaches judicial principles to other judges nationally.
He spoke to KHN in his rooms in Woodland, California. The interview is scheduled for length and clarity.
When did you realize you had a problem coping with stress?
I sat on a bench for four or five years. I was leaving a committee meeting in the Bay Area of the California Judiciary, and I got in my car and blew up the engine, and suddenly my shoulder and left arm became numb. My first thought was a heart attack and my second thought was a stroke, but the numbness subsided. The doctor said it was stress, and I said, "What do you mean, stress?" "You don't get it," he said.
That conversation with your doctor was 20 years or more ago.
All right. And it got to the point where I finally got a psychiatric diagnosis in 2008, after a lawyer decided to challenge me. Depression soon reached 11. It built itself on it and finally came to a point where I woke up in the middle of the night and stayed awake all night, feeling depressed, feeling some stress, feeling some anxiety.
Was it the idea of self-promotion that made you depressed?
Certainly. Some judges seem successful when they are challenged, and I am happy with it. I always talk in front of people, but doing it when I try to keep my job is new. The main diagnosis was a generalized anxiety disorder, with episodes of depression. We found drugs that worked for me, and that is important, because there are so many medicines out there. Getting the right amount and the right amount is important.
He last won that 2008 election.
By hand. And the day after the election, I fell asleep like a baby, and I woke up the next day with no worries at all. It was the first time I had that kind of nightmare and that kind of waking time from the first day someone announced to fight me. But I have had recurring bouts of anxiety ever since, especially those related to my father's health. Going back to my time in public college, I actually had a panic attack during the last phase of algebra.
