How A dam with snow; Perito Moreno Glacier attracts adventure seekers!

The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the largest tourist attractions in the Patagonia region of Argentina. The glacier is also the third largest body of freshwater in the world, replacing the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets. The attraction of the place is the ease of arrival, the opportunity to enjoy the wonders of nature and the possibility of adventurous trekking for those who are interested.

A block with ice

The Perito Moreno Glacier stretches from 2100 m above sea level, from the Southern Patagonian Glacier in the Andes Mountains to Lake Argentino just 180 m above sea level. The glacier is about 30 km long.

This glacier often forms a dam inside Lake Argentina. This occurs when the glacier grows across a tributary extending to the south side of the lake and divides the lake in two. It is common for the glacier base to become a natural barrier as it grows well like a wall. But there will be huge differences in water levels on both sides. In the southern tributary, known as Brazo Rico, the water level rises to 30 feet above Lake Argentino. This difference is caused by the melting glacier. After a certain limit, the water pressure in Brazo Rico could not withstand and the dam would burst and fall into Lake Argentino. It will take at least five years for the glacier to grow again and reach the part where the wall forms. The last major crash was in 2013. In 2016, 2018 and 2019, the barrier was slightly broken. The small part of the iceberg is considered to be a natural wonder and attracts a large number of tourists.

Age 18000 years

The Perito Moreno Glacier is thought to have formed during the last ice age on Earth. The Last Ice Age began 2.6 million years ago and ended 11,700 years ago. This ice age is responsible for many of the features of the Earth today. Scientists have estimated that the Morato Glacier is about 18,000 years old.

For centuries, glaciers around the world have been receding due to the deterioration of their ecological balance. Here, too, Perito Moreno stands out. The glacier grows at an average rate of 2 m per day. That's why it reaches Argentino Lake at regular intervals.
