As the controversy grew, the Vidyaranyapura Police stepped in to clarify the situation. According to their statement, the signboard had been installed by a man named Babu, and the building owner—where the cafe is located—was unaware of its existence. Once the issue was flagged, the sign was promptly removed. “The matter was brought to the attention of the hotel owners, who informed us that the billboard had been removed. This will be reviewed,” the police stated.
The incident triggered a flood of reactions online, with social media users divided in their opinions. One user shared a personal experience, stating, “Bengaluru has become highly unwelcoming to outsiders because of the language issue. Last year, I boarded a city bus and asked for a ticket in Hindi. The conductor refused to acknowledge me. I was shocked and haven’t returned since.”*
Another comment read, “Do they mean to say customers should know Hindi? If so, the cafe should be shut for blatantly creating tensions in a city already on the boil over language issues.”
Some, however, urged caution before jumping to conclusions. “This is provocative! Respect the land and its culture. But before shaming a business, find out if it was done by the owner or some vindictive staff,”* one user advised. Others speculated that the signboard might have been tampered with, with one commenter noting, *“Appears hacked. It’s easy to manipulate these boards.”
This incident isn’t the first time Bengaluru’s language dynamics have made waves. Earlier, a vox pop video went viral where residents were asked to name the city’s official language. Surprisingly, none mentioned Kannada—the state language—with responses ranging from Hindi and English to Tamil.
