If you happen to be lucky enough to live in a community with a community college you should really make time in your program to explore and see what kind of classes they can offer that can help you improve your education and career. You may be surprised at the variety of courses you can take even at a community college level. I know I have found some of the courses offered and the level of learning that happens is very impressive. I think a lot of people in the past who were ignoring the important role that public colleges play in providing an affordable learning environment would be surprised too.

Public colleges have a bad reputation for being empty when this can not be far from the truth. Many international nurses are products of community college education. In many states, associates degree nursing programs are stronger and provide more health information than most bachelor degree nursing programs. This means that graduates of nursing school with associates degrees in nursing are often better prepared to deal with patient care than those with ‘higher degrees’. This is by no means an insult to BS Nursing students at all. In fact, most hospitals will not consider you a candidate for nursing unless you have a Bachelor's degree. This is only intended to expose the associates' degree programs as competitive and inclusive despite common misconceptions.

Of course there are other benefits to studying at the community college level, at least the first two years of your education. One of those benefits that speaks volumes to me is that teachers in community colleges are committed to teaching. They do not work for their own research or for literature. They are there to help you achieve your goals, which means you are not a hindrance to their pursuit of their goals.

Community colleges also offer excellent protection for students who may not have excelled in their high school sport or who are returning to college after a long absence. You will not find large hall classes at the community college level that the major universities are famous for donating. You will also not find that teachers do not have time for their students. There is a low number of teachers and students in community colleges so that professionals have time to address the needs of students.

Another benefit is that even if you do not continue your four-year degree after completing your community college education you will find that your ability to earn is much better than those who do not have at least a two-year college education. Research also shows that students who complete a two-year degree program at a community college are more likely to graduate and receive a four-year degree than those students who start their four-year university education.

There are a few problems that can be associated with community college education and you should be aware of these so that they do not become a problem for you. First of all, some universities do not accept the many courses offered at the community college level as transfer credits. Make sure you know what courses are required of the university you are planning to move to avoid this. You may also find that you are limited by the courses you can take and the times when they will be available. Make sure you have all the limitations in advance so you don’t take another class year to graduate.

All in all, a community college education can shine like a university education if you enter the program with an open mind and are willing to study. I hope you will take advantage of this inexpensive option before moving on to university studies if possible.
