- Starting a healthy lifestyle includes eating nutritious foods, regular physical activity, and prioritizing your mental health. If you're not feeling well, you'll probably notice it. Maybe you just feel "uncomfortable." You may feel tired, your digestive system may not be working as well as usual, or you may appear to have a cold. Mentally, you may have trouble concentrating and may feel anxious or depressed. Good news: A healthy lifestyle makes you feel good. Even better, you don`t have to overhaul your entire life overnight. It`s pretty easy to make a couple of small changes that can steer you in the direction of improved well-being. And once you make one change, that success can motivate you to continue to make more positive shifts. What is a “healthy lifestyle”? Ask 50 people to define what a “healthy lifestyle” is, and you`ll likely get 50 different answers. That`s because there`s no one way to be healthy. A healthy lifestyle simply means doing things that make you happy and feel good. For one person, that may mean walking a mile five times a week, eating fast food once a week, and spending virtual or in-person time with loved ones every other day. For someone else, a healthy lifestyle may be training and running two marathons a year, following a keto diet, and never having a sip of alcohol. Neither of these is better than the other. Both are perfect for this person. You can decide what a healthy lifestyle should look like. What benefits does it bring? Changes that improve your health can benefit your body, mind, wallet, and even the environment. 1. Preventing Disease Healthy habits can reduce your risk of various diseases, including those that may run in your family. For example, a recent study found that adults who followed a standard American diet (rich in fruits and vegetables) for eight weeks had a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. In another study in 2020, researchers found that for every 66 grams of daily fruit and vegetable intake, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes decreased by 25 percent. Replacing some refined grains with whole grains also reduces disease risk. In an observational study of nearly 200,000 adults, those who ate the most whole grains were 29 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who ate the least. And a review of 45 studies found that consuming 90 grams (or three 30-gram servings) of whole grains daily reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease by 22 percent and lowered the risk of coronary heart disease. It concluded that the risk of cancer was reduced by 19 percent and cancer risk by 15 percent. When it comes to exercise, just 11 minutes a day can add years to your life. In a 2020 study, researchers monitored more than 44,000 adults. People who did 11 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day had a lower risk of death than those who exercised at that intensity for just two minutes. This comparison holds true even if people were sitting for 8.5 hours each day.
Replacing Whole Grains
Replacing refined grain products with whole grains has positive health effects. A small 2017 study divided 81 postmenopausal men and women into two groups. Half of the participants ate a diet containing whole grains, and the other half ate a diet containing the same number of calories but containing refined grains. After 6 weeks, the whole grain group had increased resting metabolic rate (RMR). RMR tells you how many calories your body burns while at rest. Studies from 2016 and 2020 show that eating more whole grains reduces the risk of diabetes, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Start small by replacing refined grains with whole grains each day. Maybe it's toast for breakfast or pilaf for dinner. Experiment with different grains and flavors to find which you like best. Whole grain products include: Oatmeal Whole grain bread and pasta Brown and wild rice Buckwheat Bulgar wheat Millet Barley Spelled flour Quinoa Farro Refined Grains include: Contains: 444 4 White bread and pasta White rice Most breakfast cereals Chips Pretzels Crackers 3. Be more active The word "exercise" or "workout" scares me If so, think of this step as physical activity, or simply moving your body. You don't have to run a marathon to be healthy, or even run at all. Take a walk, ride a bike, take salsa dancing lessons, practice martial arts, or take his online training course. The most important thing is to choose an activity that you enjoy. If you choose an activity that interests you, you're more likely to stick with it. Next, remember that you don't have to start with long training sessions. Aim for 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week. When ready, add another 5 or 10 minutes. Continue doing this until you reach at least 30 minutes per day, most days of the week. 4. Maintain Friendships Strong relationships and communication with friends and loved ones support mental health. On the other hand, people who have poor relationships have a higher risk of depression. People with the worst social relationships are more than twice as likely to develop depression than those with the best relationships. Similarly, research suggests that feelings of isolation are associated with poorer self-rated health and increased risk of depression. It is also associated with a variety of health problems, including headaches, heart palpitations, and lower back, neck, and shoulder pain. Even if you can't meet your friends and family in person, make an appointment for him to talk on the phone or video call at least once a week. Or, simply start chatting with a neighbor when you see them. 5. Control stress Chronic stress puts your body into fight-or-flight mode all the time. This taxes your immune system and makes you more susceptible to health problems, including: heart disease diabetes digestive problems depression high blood pressure anxiety difficulty sleeping Exercise can help reduce stress by releasing pent-up energy. Physical activity can also boost the release of mood-lifting hormones called endorphins. Mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing, journaling, and spending time in nature may also help reduce stress. Talking to a friend may also be helpful.
